AP / Fernando Antonio

An injured inmate is carried into a hospital early Wednesday after a fire swept the prison in Comayagua, Honduras, 90 miles north of the capital of Tegucigalpa.

One inmate’s reported death wish led to the immolation of more than 300 people at a Honduran prison after the apparent instigator set fire to his mattress on Wednesday in the town of Comayagua, where some 356 others were still missing after the blaze, according to The Associated Press.  —KA

AP via The Washington Post:

Outraged relatives of dead inmates tried to storm the gates of the prison Wednesday morning to recover the remains of their loves ones, witnesses told The Associated Press. The crowds were driven back by police officers firing tear gas.

Channel 5 television showed dozens of inmates’ relatives hurling rocks at officers.

The prison housed people convicted of serious crimes such as homicide and armed robbery, Danilo Orellana, director of the national prison system, told The Associated Press.

vector——-it’s my wish neither to defend the Honduran oligarchy or the
member of that oligarchy, Zelaya, who wished to pretend to be a champion of
the poor in order to consolidate his hold on power.

your assertion was about him getting bounced for a minimum-wage proposal
wasn’t a good one and it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that if you tell
people that a vote to overturn the constitution and keep Zelaya in power is
going to put extra money in your pocket, you’re pretty much a conniving SOB.

and BTW, that constitution, and the provision about term limits, was not all the
idea of the Honduran oligarchy. do the research and you might get a surprise at
whuch winner of the Nobel Peace Prize was behind that.

heterochromatic;

here are a few links to support my assertion:

http://www.ajs-us.org/Zelaya_defender_of_the_poor.htm

“Some say Manuel Zelaya threatened democracy by proposing a constitutional assembly. But the poor of Honduras know that Zelaya raised the minimum salary. That’s what they understand. They know he defended the poor by sharing money with mayors and small towns. That’s why they are out in the streets closing highways and protesting (to demand Zelaya’s return)”

So, you see we are not in conflict; Zelaya did propose to raise the minimum wage and have “the people” vote on changing the constitution written by the rich and privileged class.

vector, that’s not true that Zelaya got axed for suggesting raising the minimum
wage.

I don’t know where you picked up that sack of fertilizer or why you’re trying to
spread it here, but he was toppled for trying to use the army to circumvent the
constitutional term limit to his time in office.

get the facts and stop dropping manure.

The 2009 Honduran(CIA backed) coup that took out President José Manuel Zelaya for daring to suggest raising the minimum wage and replaced him with the “thug” Porfirio Lobo should be mention for context. At first the Obama administration called the take over a Coup, but soon after had Hillary Clinton walk it back. Enter Lanny Davis; Clintonian, PR “fixer” who manage to but a human face on Lobo gang of thud.

I would not be too quick to by the official story; it sounds to neat and tidy. Of the 300 plus burned alive; I wonder how many supported the The Zelaya government? The neo-liberal face of Obama reminds me of the same CIA that participated in the murder of Che” Guevara while LBJ pushed his “war on poverty” here at home. I smell a rat!
