President Obama Calls for ‘End to Repression’ in Cuba

Obama
White House / Pete Souza

On Wednesday, President Obama issued a statement criticizing recent human rights violations in Cuba, “including the tragic death of Orlando Zapata Tamayo, the repression visited upon Las Damas de Blanco,” among other incidents, which he deemed “deeply disturbing.” On a brighter note, he also reiterated his wish to bring on a new era in Cuba-U.S. relations. Over to you, Cuban government.  —KA

The White House:

These events underscore that instead of embracing an opportunity to enter a new era, Cuban authorities continue to respond to the aspirations of the Cuban people with a clenched fist.

Yes Cuba has problems but even if they were a dictatorship, which I would have some argument with, at another time perhaps, at least they are not the ‘dictator of the world’ which is pretty much what the US has become with its 800 bases, and its CIA infiltration of practically every nation state in the world, its assassination programs, secret prisons, and NSA spying of every single American, covert operations, psy ops, secret coups, death squads (coming back in Honduras) wars… well the list goes on

Lift the embargo and create a friend. We’ll be amazed at what will happen next.

The worst repression in Cuba happens in Guantanamo. Obama continues the hypocrisy of criticizing Cuba’s rights (they have a right to health care and basic nutrition) while we continue to run our gulags, use rendition, keep the “patriot act” and refuse to stop Florida Cubans from terrorist activity directed at Cuba. How about freeing the Cuban 5?

Perhaps you would care to actually provide a refutation of my position that a country like Cuba that exports health has a better human rights record than a country like the U.S. that exports war and death, as your current argument appears to lack any substantive content.

The Cubans have done more in the way of liberating third world countries from the yoke of imperialism (usually US imperialism) than any other nation-state in the world.  They sent doctors to Algeria, and they sent troops to the Congo and Angola when liberation forces were most needed.  Lift the embargo and end the US-led suffering in Cuba!

How could the warden in chief of Guantanamo make such a statement?

Obama forgot to criticize more serious human rights abuses in countries the US supports and arms like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Colombia, Honduras etc., etc.

Ask “people of color” (how does that differ from “colored people”) in Cuba how things are going for them. How many blacks are in ANY position of authority in Cuba?

Oh, Obama has to say that.  There are a lot of Cubans in Florida and some other states whose most natural ideological home is the Democratic Party; they just don’t like the Castros.  As the older folks die off, however, the younger ones are drifting towards the American mainstream, which for people of Hispanic culture tends to be Democrat.  It’s time to give Soft Cop some play.

Does president Obama want to compare human rights abuses in Cuba with our preferred status trade partner China? Bring it on!

The same day that the ‘Ladies in White’ were arrested in Cuba. for demonstrating against Governmental actions, Cindy Sheehan and others was arrested in Washington DC for demonstrating against our Endless Wars. Three protesters against the ‘School of the Americas” [it now has a different name because of bad publicity], at Fort Benning GA, were sentenced to six months in Prison this month for stepping onto the army base. One, a Priest, went to a County jail. The others are in a Federal Prison.

Cuba may not treat demonstrators nicely, but we won’t even allow dissidents to testify about Single Payer Health Insurance in the Congress. Now that’s a dangerous situation!

If our hands and arms were not covered with the blood of innocents in the Mid-East, Latin America, North America, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and Dresden, our opinion might count for more. We torture and imprison people around the world, and lock them up forever on the whim of the President and his helpers. Then there are the drone attacks in Pakistan - We are too cowardly to even face the enemy, much less our accusers.

Assassination attempts, CIA trained and financed bombers, biological weapons [dengue fever in the late 60s]... The Cubans have little reason to trust our good attentions when we finance anti-government groups. Look at how we treat Muslims who receive funds from The Taliban or Al Quaida.

Talk about Chutzpah, we put the Israelis to shame!

Come on Mr President. Everybody knows there is no repression in Cuba. Zapata was killed by the CIA, and the Ladies in White are terrorists who should all be shot! You completely mischaracterize the Cubans’ desires. They, in fact, have everything they need, just ask them. They can all read, they are all perfectly healthy, well-fed and well-housed. The desire for anything more than that is bourgeois greed and has no place in Cuba.

Hmmm…Cuba generates revenue by sending doctors to Venezuela and other countries, and has one of the highest literacy rates in the world.  On the other hand, Obama make a deal last summer with insurance and hospital organizations to exclude the single payer option and school are being closed throughout the U.S.  I would prefer a little more Cuban-style oppression and a bit less American-style “freedom.”

You know as a Cuban American, I say stop the boycott. This small little island is not perfect.  Yes there are human rights issues, but we have them to. Ask those of color in this country, and they will tell you a story

What the US can not forgive is the defiance of this this tiny little country who had the gumption to say no to the mighty empire and mean it.  It has caused the people dearly but, when you stand on principle - it does.  This is something we here in the US sorely do not understand.

It has been over 40+ years get over it.
