Portuguese activists celebrate the passage of a gay marriage bill Friday.

“The large print giveth and the small print taketh away”—T. Waits (1990). So goes the news that Portugal has become the sixth European nation to pass a law allowing same-sex marriage, though parliament rejected proposals to let gay couples adopt children. —JCL

The BBC:

Portugal’s parliament has passed a law to legalise same-sex marriage, but rejected proposals to allow homosexual couples to adopt.

The bill was approved with the support of the governing Socialist Party and other parties further to the left.

Prime Minister Jose Socrates opened the debate with an appeal to back the law, saying it would put right an injustice that had caused unnecessary pain.

The law has been fiercely opposed by conservatives in the Catholic country.

My country (U.S.) has been hijacked by Christian Fundamentalist Terrorists with the aid of Ayatolla GW Bush and the remnants of his sick government and Supreme Court appointees.  We are ruled by the   UNITED STATES TALIBAN.i.e.. Shooting   a Doctor in Kansas, the Shepherd murder, etc… makes me begin to regret my 4+ years of military service during Vietnam, defending the rights of religious intolerant bigots…  Bless Portugal for its act of goodness !~!  Shame on the U.S.!!!!!

As someone whose Jewish ancestors fled Portugal around 1610 to escape from the Spanish Inquisition (the King of Spain Philip 2 was King Philip 1 of Portugal at the time; regrettably one of them was burned alive in Lisbon before he could get out). I am proud that this country of my ancestors has ended one aspect of Gay Inquisition ahead of the Medieval State in which I reside, the US of A.

Amazing how countries that arguably have high standards on religious views actually legalize gay marriage.  Yet in the US, the land of the free, bigotry and discrimination abounds, and we consider ourselves religious.  There must be something wrong with the way we are following Christianity.  Right wing nuts have hijacked and exploit religion to no end…how about if they just minded their own business and worried about their own personal lives from falling apart.  Bigots and people not happy with their own lives, so they want to make the lives of others miserable too.

If two people over 18 choose to be in a loving relationship, it should not be up to the state to decide whether they should be together. The anti-gay argument is as ridiculous as the argument of not allowing women to vote or non whites to have any sort of human rights.
Well Portugal, I congratulate you and will definately come to visit you in 2010. Actually,I’m off to Madeira next week then am planning to visit Lisbon in the summer period when it’s warmer.
Long Live Portugal!

The possession for consumption was decriminalized. To sell it is still a crime.

Pedro, Portugal DID decriminalize all drug possession in 2001, how is that false?
You know decriminalization is not the same as legalization, right?

Its a law that wont make any difference apparently… But it will solve a lot of injustices for some people.

Example: 2 people lived together 40 years,
one dies and her family (brothers and sisters) want and legaly have the right to inherit her stuff. The life partner of the dead person goes to court and looses cause law doesn’t recognize their relation.

To Mundt: Honestly homophobic, racist and criminal people arent the turists portugal want.

BTW you shouldnt go to spain, netherlands, belgium, sweeden, norway, canada and some US states either smile

Dear Mundt,
How right you are!  Who would want to visit such a morally impoverished country that puts such emphasis on social justice such as Portugal, (or any of the countries that have full gay marriage such as The Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Norway, Sweden, and South Africa, or any of the countries that recognize same-sex civil unions such as Andorra, Australia, Colombia, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Luxembourg, New Zealand, Portugal, Slovenia, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Uraguay, or even parts of the United States!)  Probably better to just stay home.  But I hear Uganda is lovely this time of year!
