Pelosi Goes Over Bush’s HeadPosted on Mar 30, 2007
Over the president’s objections, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to visit the president of Syria next weekend. Pelosi’s spokesman said the meeting was inspired by the Iraq Study Group, which recommended engaging regional players—a recommendation the Bush administration has so far ignored.

By + Might Come, The Work Hard, Pay Offs ++++++, April 2, 2007 at 10:11 am # Personally I think the dividends will pay off for the soldiers in Iraq. She is trying very hard, unlike the occupant who believes in pushing guns up peoples noses. Note how many other world leaders realize we have a DO NOTHING occupant at 1600 Penn Ave. Inductive ~ Deductive LOGIC
By marie2, April 2, 2007 at 9:43 am # Way to go Pelosi! Political diplomacy is a much better use of our resources than blatant accusations and war. We need to redirect our policies away from this tendency and towards a more hopeful future for all Americans and the world. According to the Borgen Project, in reality only .16% of our federal budget is spent on poverty reduction, the least among wealthy nations compared to the 50% we spend on defense. We should let our representatives know that we care about global poverty.
By hotmotto, April 2, 2007 at 5:54 am # Don’t be fooled by Nancy’s actions here, remember it’s this same heartless woman that passed a measure last week that handed Bush and his Military Industrial traitors another 100 billion dollars to stir up the hornet’s nest of international terrorism to newer, more technically sophisticated, heights. That’s a hundred stacks of one thousand piles of one million dollars each. Each bill earmarked for imperialist slaughter. April 15 is coming soon. Guess where that money’s going?
By Lee, April 1, 2007 at 6:38 pm # Matt, Sorry, In hindsite a poor choice of words. Want them to do their homework and get the real facts before voteing. No I do not mean Iran.
By dk, April 1, 2007 at 5:39 pm # #61518 - absolutely correct Fadel Abdalleh, great point! Bush is an unbelievable hypocrite.
By JENNA, April 1, 2007 at 1:38 pm # GOOD GIRL NANCY,GLAD TO SEE THAT WOMEN ARE FINALLY TAKING THE LEAD IN TRYING TO PROVE THAT DIPLOMACY CAN WORK,AS DID BABBARA WALTERS WHEN VISITING CHEVAS.TIME ALL WORKED TOGETHER TO CLEAN UP THE MESS THAT THIS ADM. STARTED.NO MOTHER IN ANY COUNTRY WANTS TO SEND HER SON OR DAUGHTER TO BE HARMED.
By Matt, April 1, 2007 at 6:34 am # From Comment #61569 by Lee: “Last time she listened to the war president, we attacked the wrong country.” There is no “right” country that we should be attacking. And if you you are implying that we “should” be attacking Iran, then your suggestion is particularly vile. People like you are part of the problem.
By truthfairy, April 1, 2007 at 5:03 am # time to bring on the grown ups
By Lee, March 31, 2007 at 6:58 pm # Good for Peolsi, at least this time she is going to do some homework before making a decision. Last time she listened to the war president, we attacked the wrong county.
By Matt, March 31, 2007 at 6:55 pm # Pelosi’s pattern is that she keeps trying (God bless her) to break out of the box that the Israel lobby wants her to stay in - but then the Israel lobby always manages to stuff her back in. I expect that once again the Israel lobby will put her in her place. She will either cancel the trip to Syria, or she will go, but scrupulously avoid anything like a genuine attempt to engage in honest discussion of legitimate Syrian concerns and grievances. Israel simply hates the Arabs. Israel cannot abide actions or statements by American politicians that might imply that Arabs are just as important as Israelis. Israel and her nominally “American” partisans demand that Americans WORSHIP the Jewish State.
By Zena, March 31, 2007 at 5:43 pm # Bush reminds me of my ex-husband. He refused to talk about the problems in our relationship, so that way, he felt he always won. Of course he still won’t accept the responsiblity of forcing me to divorce him. When there is no dialogue, there is no working relationship. I take my hat off to Speaker Pelosi. YOU GO GIRL!!!
By Margaret Currey, March 31, 2007 at 5:02 pm # Bush does not want a women to suceed where he has failed, maybe he should quit before he gets Impeached, the public (besides the Republicians) wants it. Margaret from Vancouver Washington
By IgnoranceIsNotBliss, March 31, 2007 at 3:56 pm # What’s more interesting is that the misadministration has sent Repubs to Syria over the last several weeks but they are critizing the Dems for going? Riddle me that, please.
By Marie Miller, March 31, 2007 at 2:28 pm # Thank heaven for people like Nancy Pelosi, who will not let small-minded people like Bush stop her from doing what is right for the country. The committee report had a lot of good suggestions in it that have not been followed - until now. This country should be on speaking terms with all the countries of the world, especially those who have no connection to 9/11!
By Don Knutsen, March 31, 2007 at 2:12 pm # We have obviously had a completley disfunctional state department for most of bu$h’s tenure. Powell was hamstrung by Cheney /Rumsfeld, if he went against the tide, which wasn’t much being the loyal soldier he was. So, taking on some form of discourse I would think could only help move things for the positive. This bone-headed mentality so far doesn’t seem to be working. We haven’t been an honest broker in the middle east for along time. We certainly haven’t even pretended to be with this administration.

By Peter, March 31, 2007 at 12:58 pm # Contrary to Mr. Bush’s beliefs...he is not Emperor of the Universe.
By vet240, March 31, 2007 at 12:54 pm # It’s ironic that bu$h won’t talk with Syria or Iran. Neither country had anything to do with the 9/11 attack on us. At the same time bu$h has maintained ties to Saudi Arabia, the home of most of those who participated in the 9/11 attack and the home to bu$h family friends the Bin Laden family. The Bin Ladens helped to finance bu$h in his first failed oil drilling venture. How Ironic is that? bu$h should be investigated and charged with fraternizing with state enemies. I can’t bring myself to capitalize his name or even spell it correctly.
By faith, March 31, 2007 at 12:01 pm # Good for Speaker Pelosi ! If Mr. Bush does not recognize that the position of President of the United States includes engaging in dialogue with other sovereign nations, then he can step aside and allow a true leader and human being demonstrate to him just how it is accomplished.
By Hank, March 31, 2007 at 11:55 am # The administration does not want anyone to talk to anyone else. The “others” are all evil. The White House wants to monopolize the discussions so they can prevent any type of progress towards peace. Pelosi should simply tell the White House to drop dead. She might as well start changing the way we deal with the rest of the world now, since surely more intelligent people will occupy the White House within the next two years.
By richard mann, March 31, 2007 at 11:54 am # Not to worry. Nancy is going to Syria representing the interests of AIPAC. She is there mainly to formally convey Israel’s threats.
By Fadel Abdallah, March 31, 2007 at 10:27 am # “...and one (government) that is allowing foreign fighters to flow through its borders to Iraq.” If we take the above statement from one of Bush’s gang members about the Syrian government; apply it to the Bush government, 9 months in office before 9/11, so the statement would read:
By tyler, March 31, 2007 at 9:49 am # What a concept! Going in to open some actual dialogue face to face, instead of relying on ‘intel’ to determine what other countries are doing. Who knows, maybe she’ll be able to shed a little more light on what OUR gov’t is actually doing over there. Maybe thats why the administration discourages such visits.
By Dale Headley, March 31, 2007 at 9:45 am # What the Bush administration fears more than anything else about this planned visit to Syria by Nancy Pelosi is that it gives Bashar al-Assad an opportunity to get his side of the controversy disseminated among the U.S. public. Bush prefers that Americans hear only his own propaganda - no one else’s. And do the Bushies really think that threats and condemnation will deter Pelosi? I think they should know her better than that, by now. Another possibility for Bush’s anger: Pelosi’s visit would lend some legitimacy to the Iraq Study Group, particularly James Baker, and by extension, his own father. Nothing eats at hs insides more than that.
By Jack Williams, March 31, 2007 at 9:43 am # THANK GOD AND THE VOTERS SHE DOESN’T LESSEN TO A TOTALITARIAN GOVERNMENT.
By manny, March 31, 2007 at 9:42 am # We know that American foreign policy is Israeli driven given that reality then not communicating with Syria is logical. Think about it friends, the greatest power on the face of this earth will not sit down and discuss their disputes with another country. We are a nation in bondage. I don’t have any doubt that Ms. N. Polosi takes her marching orders from The Lobby but at least she gives the appearance that some one in Washington is acting with some common sense.
By James Yell, March 31, 2007 at 6:51 am # The article doesn’t say if we still maintain embassy with Syria, but if we do, which I believe we do than there is nothing wrong with a visit, although I often feel it would be nice for our politicians to restrict the number of travels they make on public money (did you understand George Bush?). Considering the mess Bush/Cheney Administration has created in the middle east, we can only hope that some good will come of a none confrontational meeting between Pelosi and Assad, better than dropping the bombs just because we can. Oh, and by the way, remember that we supported Juarez in Mexico, because it was our backyard. Remember for decades we allowed Irish to raise money for insurrection in this country and did nothing to stop Irish from going back to fight. Making a charge about Syria and Iran involvement with Iraq mess, is being two faced. Why didn’t George and Cheney read a little history before making the unprovoked attack on Iraq in the first place?
By RB-Chicago, March 31, 2007 at 5:52 am # I know you’ve already seen this but JUST to make it clear that the wingnuts are only letting ONE SIDE of this story out...what morons....
By Carol, March 30, 2007 at 8:25 pm # At long last someone is doing the diplomacy.
By Kol Klink, March 30, 2007 at 8:18 pm # You go girl!!! Now you are on the right track. You have that neo con rat pack on the run and dont let up. Talk to Syria, talk to Iran, make some deals and show Condi how a secretary of state should operate. Bushco and the the neo cons are dead they just havent been buried yet. If Bush doesnt sign the funding bill that you and the senate sent him dont send him another one. Let the idiot sit around waiting for a bill that isnt coming. Did anyone bother to tell him that congress is not required to submit anything? Probably not, since Rove is busy recording rap music.
By 127001, March 30, 2007 at 8:07 pm # The article says:
The American people have accused the President of being a lot of things, including such published things as “fascist” “war criminal” and on and on. So, he must be guilty. The article says:
Gee, what “allies” are left? Maybe it sends a message to the global community that Americans are taking back their government ... hopefully in preparation for impeachment of an obviously psychologically unbalanced leader and his buddies.
By Youffraita, March 30, 2007 at 8:03 pm # First thought: If the WH ignored a suggestion by the ISG, it’s probably a good idea, and kudos to Nancy Pelosi! Second thought: If the WH discourages members of Congress from speaking with Syria, it’s an even better idea, and you go, Pelosi! Third thought: WTF does Shrub think he’s hiding THIS time?
