U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad

Over the president’s objections, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to visit the president of Syria next weekend. Pelosi’s spokesman said the meeting was inspired by the Iraq Study Group, which recommended engaging regional players—a recommendation the Bush administration has so far ignored.

CNN:

The White House has criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s plans to stop in Syria next week during a Middle East trip that began Friday.

She will be the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit Syria since relations deteriorated between Damascus and Washington.

The United States has accused Syria of aiding the Sunni insurgency in western Iraq with weapons and fighters. Syria also is accused of supporting the militant extremist groups Hezbollah, a Shiite political party and militia, and Hamas.

“We do not encourage and, in fact, we discourage members of Congress to make such visits to Syria,” said White House deputy spokeswoman Dana Perino. “This is a country that is a state sponsor of terror, one that is trying to disrupt the (Prime Minister Fouad) Siniora government in Lebanon and one that is allowing foreign fighters to flow through its borders to Iraq.

Personally I think the dividends will pay off for the soldiers in Iraq.  She is trying very hard, unlike the occupant who believes in pushing guns up peoples noses.

Note how many other world leaders realize we have a DO NOTHING occupant at 1600 Penn Ave.

Way to go Pelosi!  Political diplomacy is a much better use of our resources than blatant accusations and war.  We need to redirect our policies away from this tendency and towards a more hopeful future for all Americans and the world.

According to the Borgen Project, in reality only .16% of our federal budget is spent on poverty reduction, the least among wealthy nations compared to the 50% we spend on defense.  We should let our representatives know that we care about global poverty.

Don’t be fooled by Nancy’s actions here, remember it’s this same heartless woman that passed a measure last week that handed Bush and his Military Industrial traitors another 100 billion dollars to stir up the hornet’s nest of international terrorism to newer, more technically sophisticated, heights. That’s a hundred stacks of one thousand piles of one million dollars each. Each bill earmarked for imperialist slaughter.  April 15 is coming soon.  Guess where that money’s going?

From Comment #61569 by Lee:

“Last time she listened to the war president, we attacked the wrong country.”

There is no “right” country that we should be attacking.

And if you you are implying that we “should” be attacking Iran, then your suggestion is particularly vile. People like you are part of the problem.

Pelosi’s pattern is that she keeps trying (God bless her) to break out of the box that the Israel lobby wants her to stay in - but then the Israel lobby always manages to stuff her back in.

I expect that once again the Israel lobby will put her in her place. She will either cancel the trip to Syria, or she will go, but scrupulously avoid anything like a genuine attempt to engage in honest discussion of legitimate Syrian concerns and grievances.

Israel simply hates the Arabs. Israel cannot abide actions or statements by American politicians that might imply that Arabs are just as important as Israelis. Israel and her nominally “American” partisans demand that Americans WORSHIP the Jewish State.

Bush reminds me of my ex-husband. He refused to talk about the problems in our relationship, so that way, he felt he always won. Of course he still won’t accept the responsiblity of forcing me to divorce him. When there is no dialogue, there is no working relationship. I take my hat off to Speaker Pelosi. YOU GO GIRL!!!

Thank heaven for people like Nancy Pelosi, who will not let small-minded people like Bush stop her from doing what is right for the country. The committee report had a lot of good suggestions in it that have not been followed - until now. This country should be on speaking terms with all the countries of the world, especially those who have no connection to 9/11!

We have obviously had a completley disfunctional state department for most of bu$h’s tenure. Powell was hamstrung by Cheney /Rumsfeld, if he went against the tide, which wasn’t much being the loyal soldier he was. So, taking on some form of discourse I would think could only help move things for the positive. This bone-headed mentality so far doesn’t seem to be working. We haven’t been an honest broker in the middle east for along time. We certainly haven’t even pretended to be with this administration.

It’s ironic that bu$h won’t talk with Syria or Iran.

Neither country had anything to do with the 9/11 attack on us.

At the same time bu$h has maintained ties to Saudi Arabia, the home of most of those who participated in the 9/11 attack and the home to bu$h family friends the Bin Laden family. The Bin Ladens helped to finance bu$h in his first failed oil drilling venture. How Ironic is that?

bu$h should be investigated and charged with fraternizing with state enemies.

I can’t bring myself to capitalize his name or even spell it correctly.

Good for Speaker Pelosi !  If Mr. Bush does not recognize that the position of President of the United States includes engaging in dialogue with other sovereign nations, then he can step aside and allow a true leader and human being demonstrate to him just how it is accomplished.
It is obvious that Dr. Condoleeza Rice is inept in matters of foreign policy. Witness America’s more isolated and reviled global status. Directly caused by current White House policies.
Thank you Speaker Pelosi.  Thank you for telling this petulant president to “calm down”.  Thank you for your courage and clarity concerning matters which are important to the survival of our nation and to humanity.

The administration does not want anyone to talk to anyone else.  The “others” are all evil.  The White House wants to monopolize the discussions so they can prevent any type of progress towards peace.  Pelosi should simply tell the White House to drop dead.  She might as well start changing the way we deal with the rest of the world now, since surely more intelligent people will occupy the White House within the next two years.

“...and one (government) that is allowing foreign fighters to flow through its borders to Iraq.”

If we take the above statement from one of Bush’s gang members about the Syrian government; apply it to the Bush government, 9 months in office before 9/11, so the statement would read:

“… and this is one government (Bush’s) that allowed foreign terrorists to flow through its borders to the U.S. to carry on 9/11.”

It is only if we do these kind of word games that all Bush’s propaganda and falsehoods will be exposed for what they are; just evil propaganda.

I am glad that there is at least one reasonable and courageous politician, Pelosi, that understands Bush’s evil propaganda for what it is and decides to ignore him in favor of what is good for America and world peace.

What a concept! Going in to open some actual dialogue face to face, instead of relying on ‘intel’ to determine what other countries are doing.  Who knows, maybe she’ll be able to shed a little more light on what OUR gov’t is actually doing over there.  Maybe thats why the administration discourages such visits.

What the Bush administration fears more than anything else about this planned visit to Syria by Nancy Pelosi is that it gives Bashar al-Assad an opportunity to get his side of the controversy disseminated among the U.S. public.  Bush prefers that Americans hear only his own propaganda - no one else’s.  And do the Bushies really think that threats and condemnation will deter Pelosi?  I think they should know her better than that, by now.  Another possibility for Bush’s anger: Pelosi’s visit would lend some legitimacy to the Iraq Study Group, particularly James Baker, and by extension, his own father.  Nothing eats at hs insides more than that.

We know that American foreign policy is Israeli driven given that reality then not communicating with Syria is logical. Think about it friends, the greatest power on the face of this earth will not sit down and discuss their disputes with another country. We are a nation in bondage. I don’t have any doubt that Ms. N. Polosi takes her marching orders from The Lobby but at least she gives the appearance that some one in Washington is acting with some common sense.

The article doesn’t say if we still maintain embassy with Syria, but if we do, which I believe we do than there is nothing wrong with a visit, although I often feel it would be nice for our politicians to restrict the number of travels they make on public money (did you understand George Bush?).

Considering the mess Bush/Cheney Administration has created in the middle east, we can only hope that some good will come of a none confrontational meeting between Pelosi and Assad, better than dropping the bombs just because we can.

Oh, and by the way, remember that we supported Juarez in Mexico, because it was our backyard. Remember for decades we allowed Irish to raise money for insurrection in this country and did nothing to stop Irish from going back to fight. Making a charge about Syria and Iran involvement with Iraq mess, is being two faced. Why didn’t George and Cheney read a little history before making the unprovoked attack on Iraq in the first place?

The American people have accused the President of being a lot of things, including such published things as “fascist” “war criminal” and on and on.

So, he must be guilty.

The article says:

Responding to a follow-up question, Perino added, “We think that someone should take a step back and think about the message that it sends ... to our allies.”

Gee, what “allies” are left? Maybe it sends a message to the global community that Americans are taking back their government ... hopefully in preparation for impeachment of an obviously psychologically unbalanced leader and his buddies.

First thought:  If the WH ignored a suggestion by the ISG, it’s probably a good idea, and kudos to Nancy Pelosi!

Second thought:  If the WH discourages members of Congress from speaking with Syria, it’s an even better idea, and you go, Pelosi!

Third thought:  WTF does Shrub think he’s hiding THIS time?

Anybody else following my train of thought here?
