Why shooting peace activists to death is a big deal—even in foreign policy circles, what priests’ mistresses think of celibacy, and how much public money Sarah Palin got paid to attempt public speech.

On a regular basis, Truthdig brings you the news items and odds and ends that found their way to Larry Gross, director of the USC Annenberg School for Communication. A specialist in media and culture, art and communication, visual communication and media portrayals of minorities, Gross helped found the field of gay and lesbian studies.

Hulk2008: Companies(Walmart for one) are already making a profit off their employees by purchasing life insurance policies on their employees, former employee’s and in some cases total strangers and the big companies get the survivor benefits over the deceased persons family with none of the final expenses the families are stuck with and it is legal. This has been going on since the Bush administration.

If these companies, which can legally do this, get to benefit from a persons death, then they should be made to pay all of the final expenses and debts that go along with this type of insurance before they can collect 1 cent, otherwise it should be deemed illegal to profit off the dead just because company buys insurance on.

How long would it be for a typical average person in this country to purchase life insurance policies on strangers and cash in upon their deaths with none of the expenses? Bet big government and insurance companies you yell “FOUL” if it benefited us little people and have it declared illegal to do so, so why can an employer get a pass on this questionable practice?

Will employers charge us for coming to work?

We will have to pay them to work for their companies and this year I have read that there are people working for free to gain the experience of certain types of work. Now that is exactly what big companies want-free workers and once you get them in there(your company) there will no longer be a need to hire people for actual wages when you now have those willing to work for free, why ever pay people for the work you need/want done again. We have now fallen down the slippery slope onto the throes of slavery with no wages.

College/Speeches

As for hiring the ignorant one from the North. That money could have been spent better by hiring anyone else to give a speech on any other topic other than what the people who do show up will hear exit from her lips. I listened to some of the off the wall tripe that Glenn Beck spewed to the graduating classes this year and was embarrassed by this nonsensical lecture? he gave. It made very little sense at all and even a five year old could recognize that fact. Sarah is no better. She will only allow pre-screened questions and those answers she will give make no sense to the asked questions. Look at her speeches she has given since quitting her governorship career. Those speeches have no informative value, blame everything that has gone wrong on the Democratic party, Obama, death panels, time to reload, to much regulation where there is almost no regulation(thanks to Bush and Co.), incorrectly blames the stimulus and Wall Street bailout on Obama’s administration, yet conveniently forgets that it was Bush’s bail out part 2, which John McCain claims he suspended his campaigning for to go back to D.C to help Bush with the bailout part 2, which he really didn’t suspend his campaign for(he lied) and which Sarah was right there with him,but has failed to mention or remember this fact.Out of sight out of mind with this one.

Some ideas on what Sarah could give a speech on:

Typical right wing hypocrisy- Palin preaches against taxes but is happy to feed at the trough provided by our taxes for her personal profit- anytime. Republicans say they do not believe in government, but are happy to treat our public coffers as their personal check book, as proven by 8 years of the out of control Bush administration.

The scandal of the BP disaster is more proof that unregulated big corporations are a danger to the public good when they are not regulate. Like the too big to fail banks and Wallstreet- if government is not there to protect our interests, then big business and the politicians on the take- will sell our future down the river.

Palin is so obviously on the take, that one has to question her morals and her intelligence- is she just too greedy to care?

Re “Why the Gaza boat deaths Are a huge deal:”
Is it cowardice that causes journalists to focus on public relations rather than morality?  Those deaths are not important because of any effect they might have on Israel’s PR status.  They are important because they are murder; because they are wrong.

I worked in software for 42 years, mostly in health care but also other areas of business including HR systems.

I distinctly remember a VP of HR telling us regarding employee programs that “if we screw everybody the same way, then that’s a fair practice”.  So it goes with health care and other employee “benefits”.  Companies, especially large ones, only seek to increase profits for shareholders - and their management toadies serve up the softballs one after another.  The days of actual pensions for employees are long gone, along with real health care for employees.  In fact, dare I predict a day when companies seek to make a profit on their own employees health premiums ? Will employers charge us for coming to work?

Could happen…..

Software is the modern corporate way of hiding devious personnel practices inside arcane computational formulae.

Re: Cal State University Uses $75K in Public Funds to Have Palin Speak”

Wonder what topic the Cal State administrators are paying Palin to discuss - Roads to Nowhere . . . How to Ban Books from Public Libraries . . . Armageddon is Just Around the Corner . . . Scenic Views of Russia from Alaska?

Gov. Sarah Palin is giving Cal-State Stanislaus a 25% discount off her usual speaking fee. They are getting a bargain, and should appreciate it.
