Oil Spill Investigators Spot Corporate ‘Culture of Complacency’

Flames and smoke engulf BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf after an explosion April 21.

A government commission looking into last spring’s eco-pocalypse in the Gulf of Mexico has detected a certain “culture of complacency” afoot at the trio of big companies implicated in the spill. Sounds about right.  —KA

Los Angeles Times:

A stream of evidence shows that “a culture of complacency” rather than a “culture of safety” prevailed at BP, Transocean Ltd. and Halliburton as they worked on the ill-fated Deepwater Horizon drilling rig, according to the chairmen of the presidential commission investigating the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

The panel’s investigators uncovered “a suite of bad decisions,” many still inexplicable, involving tests that were poorly run, alarming results that were ignored, proper equipment that was sidelined and safety barriers that were removed prematurely at the high-pressure well, said William K. Reilly, who is co-chairman of the commission with former Democratic Sen. Bob Graham of Florida.

Gee, does that mean that instead of prosecution and revocation of charter and confiscation of assets the offending corporate “persons” will be only subjected to a humiliating chorus of “Shame, Shame, Shame” by the Joe Barton Choir? What a F##KING joke!

It was pointed out that none of the members of this commission have any real knowledge of getting oil out of the ground. So how can they ask the searching questions that need to be asked? We already see statements that absolve BP of cutting corners and risk taking to save money. BP has a long history of cutting corners and actually lying to the Government before being caught. This commission will be one more excercise in wasted words and futility.

And what will come out of the government commission?  A strong possibility is
that some members of the commission will become cozy with the criminals and
will get big jobs in the oil industry, thus paving the way for more of the same.

Too bad that all news sound like old news.
