Obama’s ‘Evolving’ Position on Same-Sex Marriage

White House / Samantha Appleton

If the president can tolerate a cappella singing, surely he can get over his prejudice against gay people and embrace marriage equality.

President Obama’s take on gay marriage may get less absurd. Obama told The Advocate that his view is “evolving” and he struggles with his oft-repeated belief that marriage ought to be between a man and a woman (because such marriages never fail and are the will of the same supreme being who digs slavery).  —PZS

Washington Post:

Throughout his 2008 campaign and the start of his administration, Obama insisted marriage should be limited to the union of a man and a woman; most major politicians in both parties share that stance.

But in the Advocate interview, published on the eve of the president signing the repeal of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, Obama said his views are “evolving.” He then made a similar remark at news conference Wednesday.

“I struggle with this,” Obama said. “I have people who work for me, who are in powerful, strong, long-lasting gay or lesbian unions.”

Keep in mind that the issue of same-sex marriage came up in the context of whether homosexual soldiers will be allowed to marry in states where such marriages are now legal, in the context of the DADT-repeal implementation. Keep in mind also that the no-marriage provision of DADT did not say anything about “evolving” views of the commander-in-chief. It accepted a same-sex marriage of a soldier as proof of behavior that demanded his or her expulsion from the armed forces. The DADT law was totally neutral about same-sex marriage outside the armed forces. Why Mr. Obama decided to inject his own prejudices into this legal affair is alarming. Given the views of Mr. Obama I predict that the implementation rules of DADT repeal will rule that homosexual soldiers will be allowed to marry when same-sex marriage is allowed in every State of the Union. It would have been infinitely better had DADT been repealed as unconstitutional by a Federal Judge.

The Administration is just now waking up to gay marriage like the New England states and much of the free world.  Speaking of civil liberties, check out http://OutMilitary.com - a new social network that just launched for gay & lesbian service members & supporters…
