President Obama arrived in Kabul on Sunday on a surprise visit to Afghanistan, where he is expected to address U.S. troops as well as put pressure on Afghan President Hamid Karzai to step up the fight against corruption and drug trafficking. —JCL

The BBC:

US President Barack Obama has arrived in Afghanistan on his first visit to the country since taking office.

During his brief trip, he is expected to press Afghan President Hamid Karzai to do more to tackle corruption and drugs trafficking, officials say.

He is also due to address US forces based in Afghanistan and US officials.

In December, Mr Obama ordered the deployment of an extra 30,000 US troops to Afghanistan and set a date of mid-2011 to begin troop withdrawal.

““For myself, I was listening to what Obama said and voted for
McKinney.

If you don’t like what Obama and the Democrats are doing,
don’t just ‘stay home’ this election.  Get out and campaign
and work for any real ‘progressive’ candidates and parties.  If
you stay home, you are leaving the field open to the tea-
baggers.”“

I myself voted for Nader but if McKinney is on a ballot, that is
where my vote will go.

As for your ’ get out and campaign for real progressives, make
sure people understand that he/she doesn’t have to be in their
state; and too, be careful with your money as I am sure there
are more than just a couple of hundred contributors to o’s
campaign who are pissed off for o making them feel they were
just ‘jacking off the mule’.

And I do assume you’re talking about congress AND the state legislatures because the state level is just as corrupted by the corporate bribery.

Does anyone notice that while this site will gladly post corporate media stories that emphasize Obama’s photo ops, you don’t seem many real ‘leftist’ writers here?

For instance, here’s what David Lindorff was saying about this on other websites.

” Incredibly, as stupid and pointless and immoral as was the war in Iraq, Obama has found himself mired in an even more stupid, pointless and immoral war in Afghanistan. And because he has chosen, in his first year in office, to escalate that war instead of wind it down and end it, and has doubled the rate of US casualties in that war, President Obama now cannot do the right thing and end it even if he wants to, because then, how to explain all those pointless deaths? Instead, he is forced to clap soldiers, perhaps some of them already doomed, on the back in the cafeteria at Bagram Air Base, and tell them, in an echo or George Bush’s famous sneak visit to Iraq, “I’m proud of you. You guys are doing great work, each and every day.”

What a pathetic joke. The only thing missing was the plastic turkey.

But then again, at least there was a turkey there.”

Actually, Mr. Lindorff, there was a turkey in Afghanistan this weekend too.

Ok, of the people who are complaining in this thread, how many voted for Obama?

On Afghanistan, no one can really claim they were misled by Obama.  Obama made if very plain in the last campaign that he considered ‘Afghanistan’ to be the ‘right war’ for the US to be fighting, and that he planned on escalating this war once he took office.

So, how many voted for this policy?  And if you did, are you still planning on voting Democrat during these mid-term elections?

Like the old song says   “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss”  ... and the hopeful note for the future .... “Won’t get fooled again!”

———————————-
The funny thing about the last election was that Obama didn’t really lie all that much.  He made it very clear that he’d expand this war, that he wouldn’t withdraw from Iraq during his first term, that he would raise defense spending and expand the army, and that he considered Ronald Reagan to be the greatest president.

The funny thing about the last election is that it was largely ‘the left’ lying to themselves and creating the false belief that Obama was some sort of progressive.
—————————
For myself, I was listening to what Obama said and voted for McKinney.

If you don’t like what Obama and the Democrats are doing, don’t just ‘stay home’ this election.  Get out and campaign and work for any real ‘progressive’ candidates and parties.  If you stay home, you are leaving the field open to the tea-baggers.

And that nuc disarmament treaty that Obama

is negotiating with   Russia…....  is as big
of   a   snowball job   as   was his health care
  bill that is now law.!!!!!!!!

All   it   does   is provide a way for the
United States and Russia to dismantle their
old and obsolete nuclear warheads   and replace
them with the new generation that   Obama
has already ordered ,  bought , and paid for.
(with, your and my money,  of course)
And of course once again,  with the new technology
you don’t need quite as many.
Another bunch of baloney thrown your way by
  the CENTRISTS inside the beltway.

A little more reminder,  after the Iraqi army moved into
Kuwait and realized they had been snookered by the
U.S. into believing that the U.S. had no problem with this.,,,,,,

They tried and tried to negotiate at the United Nations for face saving withdrawal, time and time again.
The usual vetos for this at the Security Counsel of
course was the United States,  I believe Isreal was the
floating member of the Security Counsel at the time.

Iraq was given no way to withdraw,  they begged for it.
But we had to soften them up for the eventual occupation
which had been planned for more than a decade.
Then came the shock and awe and all,  terrifying a whole
population that was followed by a decade of starvation
forced on them by guess who, that bought off every vote
they had at the United Nations.  Medicines that could have
kept children alive were denied under this blockade.
I have heard it estimated that possibly as many as
500,000 children lost their lives because of this.
HAVE A   GREAT   VACATION IN AFGHANISTAN OBAMA !!!!!!

Looks like our Sandbagger-in- Chief had to burn some cash and stir the neglected pot of making progress in Afghanistan.
After all,the Pentagon’s looking for another 130 billion, and 30 billion of it ASAP.
Gee, I wonder how we’re going to pay for it?
Aren’t they concernend about runaway spending?

Apparently, they can never seem to find the money for the American people but let’s watch Coburn fall all over himself for another war supplemental.

I also seem to recall that Obama and Pelosi swore the 130 billion emergency supplemental they appropriated last Spring was definietly the LAST ONE.
Whoops, another lie.
Oh well, you know how those trumped up wars against poverty stricken civilians seem to just go on and on and on. If only the people would stop trying to live their lives and protect their homes and families, things would go so much quicker. Don’t they know that this is for their own good.  That we must kill any men, women, and kids that MIGHT befriend some neighbor who is Taliban, and the Taliban might invite his neighbor over who the US decided is
a terrorist with AL CIADA.

The Bush doctrine is now the Obama doctrine. Attacking anyone who MIGHT, way in the future, do something the Neolibs/Neocons don’t like such as trying to live their lives in peace without US interference and exploitation.

No we can’t allow such monsters a safe haven.

Now, on to Iran. We must pulverize them till we render them totally helpless for the Israeli’s. Then Israel can wipe Hezbollah and Lebanon off the map and get that Litani River water!

Since most Americans can’t remember yesterday,  I will
remind you all of this…

Remember when the U.S. ambassador to Iraq gave Iraq the
green light to invade Kuwait?  Kind of suckered Iraq to
go reclaim that former province. That is another story,
the point…  after the Iraqi army moved into Kuwait.

our media made up some very innovative stories to get
public support for an invasion that would eventually
lead to the occupation and permanent bases that we havenow
I forget how much they gave Egypt, Jordan, Seria, Turkey
to get their support,  but the co-sponsership was bought.
But they told us,  put it in the NEW YORK TIMES, THE
WASHINGTON POST, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, FOX AND on and on and on
THAT THE IRAQI TROOPS WERE TAKING BABIES OUT OF
INCUBATORS IN KUWAITI HOSPITALS AND PUTTING THEIM IN
A BIG PILE AND BURNING THEM. All the news networks
parroted this fabricated story which later was proven to
be a lie, Some retracted, but not publicly. They called
that lie, Desert Storm, it was another great showing of
Bi-partisianship, yellow ribbons everywhere. The Iraqi
foreign minister really got snookered, his face would later appear on those rediculous cards of the BushII
version.
Most of the women flogging stories that came out of
Afghan were more of the baby burning variety of stories.

So, we’ve been fighting this war for nine years now, and the President still has to sneak into the country like a drug dealer going to see his girl in a rival gang’s territory.

You’ll know when there’s been real ‘progress’ in Iraq, Afghanistan or any of our other multitudes of wars when the President can announce his visit in advance like he would anywhere else.

I wondered what this trip was really about?  If it
was a pep talk, it could have been done with a
t.v. link. The cost alone was worth saving given
our hard times. No something else is up!

Damn, if it wasn’t for the color of skin, I would swear that here
is little w making one of his surprise visits to yuk it up with the
troops(specially selected troops) and now I can expect that with
this raggedy piece of Wealthcare legislation being passed that
we can all expect this reincarnation of w to swoop onto some
aircraft carrier deck with a ‘done and done’ banner across the
masthead.

There´s no evidence that the Taleban knew anything of 9/11. And probably it was done by Mossad anyway by remote control. Obama is an insane war criminal. Yanks, go home. You are not wanted outside United Bluff. Why is United Bluff in Afghanistan ? The pipeline from Turkmenistan ? Or insanity ? What other possible reasons for attacks by drones, etc, etc ? The bloody United Bluff is really The Great Satan after all. They got that right.

What goes on in the minds of people who think that the way to cope with tradition-bound ignorance, fear of “outsiders,” and rigid male-supsremacist tribal governance will be either “defeated” or “brought into the modern world” by drones programmed half a world away to drop bombs on caves and wretched little villages?  The “disproportionality” is not the only absurdity.  It’s the fact that, although violent opposition may quell “enemies” temporarily, it will also enrage them further, increase their vengeful urge to make sneak attacks wherever they can find a vulnerable location, and feed their antique prejudices.

There must be other ways to work gradually and carefully toward mutual understanding as we try to move together toward a better future for everybody. Using expensive, over-whelming technology is so out-of-scale it would be ludicrous except for the tragic death-driven panic on all sides that drives violence relentlessly toward absurdity and extinction.

The presence of Washington’s main man in Afghanistan will boost the status of Karzai`s government. They will now have an influential friend and longtime partner in the war against anarchy. Dissidents must now give up opium driven fantasies of power and come out of their caves. They must accept a small slice of the American pie before only the crumbs are left over.
