Chinese President Hu Jintao pays a visit to the White House with President Obama on Wednesday.

This week’s challenge for President Obama: diplomacy in the face of possible adversity, on both the domestic and international fronts. As the House of Representatives was considering a repeal of his hard-won health care reform law on Wednesday, Obama was dealing with the delicate task of hosting his Chinese counterpart, President Hu Jintao, in Washington and discussing some potentially contentious issues of both the social and economic persuasions.  —KA

Los Angeles Times:

In a historic joint news conference between the leaders of the world’s two major economic superpowers, President Obama and President Hu Jintao of China on Wednesday pledged cooperation on trade, business, human rights and intellectual property issues while downplaying the underlying tensions between the two nations.

As the two took questions from American and Chinese reporters, the White House announced a series of agreements that will increase U.S. exports to China by $45 billion and will support more than 230,000 U.S. jobs, Obama said.

“A positive, constructive, cooperative U.S.-China relationship is good for the United States,” Obama said.

He said that neither country should “view every issue through the lens of rivalry.”

Disingenuous at best.

Electronics, sportswear, all manner of disposable Wal Mart junk.  As long as big business is making big money off the backs of the working poor of China and at the expense of American labor there will be no sanctions, tariffs etc. other than on behalf of inconsequential niche industries and certain agricultural commodities to bully China in monetary or even human rights issues.  Also the credit card that President Jintao dangles beguilingly before our sieve of a Treasury is much too precious of a scaffold to let flit away.

American media are falling over themselves to make this so-called summit sound positive for the U.S.A. But let’s have a grown-up conversation here: The Chinese have us by the short and curlies.

They own us. We owe them trillions. They’ve loaned the Pentagon the money to conduct the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. They manufacture almost everything that American consumers buy.

The U.S.A. is not unlike the Spanish Empire of the late 16th Century having been subjected to idiotic rulers (Bush) and pressed into bankruptcy. The Spanish believed they were the “rulers of the world” even as their system collapsed. How different were they from Americans today?
