Reaganesque?: President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama greet people along Main Street in Moneygall, Ireland, on Tuesday.

Some may question their choice of reference material, but President Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron teamed up to pen a column for The Times of London, comparing this year’s Arab Spring to the Cold War—and themselves to that era’s American and British heads of state.  —KA

“The Oval” in USA Today:

They liken their personal efforts to two leaders who came before them: Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher.

“We will stand with those who want to bring light into dark, support those who seek freedom in place of repression, aid those laying the building blocks of democracy,” they wrote.

“We will not stand by as their aspirations get crushed in a hail of bombs, bullets and mortar fire. We are reluctant to use force, but when our interests and values come together, we know that we have a responsibility to act.”

New and Improved Comments

We are launching a major overhaul of our comments section.

In addition to more robust spam filtering and moderation, new features include the ability to rate other comments, sort how they are displayed and respond directly via e-mail or in a thread.

Unfortunately, commenters will lose their existing Truthdig identities. It's a pain, we know, but on the plus side you will now be able to log in with a plethora of options, including Google, Twitter, Facebook and Disqus accounts.

Before launching this system we spent months in discussion with our top commenters. We listened to the feedback and we hope you like what we've come up with.

Please direct any problems or concerns to us via our contact page.

The title of the article translated:

Two twits show that they’ve nothing new and in a complete and utter act of desperation COPY mimic conservatives in order to make it look like they’ve a clue.

The anti-American left has no business calling Teapartiers dumb and stupid. Because it is without a doubt the pot calling the kettle black.

This is the main reason I encouraged everyone to vote for the Mocha Savior ... I wanted the anti-American left to know what the right went through with Dubya.

Feces does float to the top…

“We are reluctant to use force, but when our interests and values come together, we know that we have a responsibility to act.”

It is hard to believe that these two guys are so ill-informed or so unimaginative that they really believe this statement, or believe that any other informed person believes it.  Like—there are only two alternatives, using force or shirking our responsibility.

The problem is IN using force, which almost always makes matters worse.  Pretending there are no alternatives is either ignorant or short-sighted or—stubbornly enslaved to the business of war for jobs and revenue.  And this latter can’t go on forever without killing off the human race.

There are alternatives.  Try solving problems with
non-oviolent methods BEFORE they get to the killing stage.  Try honest negotiations before dectators establish a foothold.  Try looking ahead instead of behind.  Try imagining how to use media, communications, money and time to develop mutually beneficial ideas, tactics and behavior.

Try climbing down off the warhorse and walking in the sunshine hand in hand.  It’s the human thing to do.

Geez, why didn’t they compare themselves to Romulus and Remus, or ‘Dick and Hairy’, of ‘Tom, Dick, and Harry’ fame? Or ‘Light’, and ‘Dark’?
