NRA Plays the Victim at National Convention
Posted on May 3, 2013
“Our freedom is under attack like never before,” said Chris Cox of the NRA Institute for Legislative Action on Friday at the gun lobby’s big get-together in Houston. As if that wasn’t enough, Texas Gov. Rick Perry opened his mouth.
Despite Congress’ refusal to pass the sort of tepid gun control that, according to polls, nearly all Americans want, the NRA and its allies continue to promote the claim that the government is coming to take away your guns.
Sen. Ted Cruz, another Texan, had the gall to describe the defeat of background check legislation—which, again, more than 9 out of 10 Americans think is a good idea—“the victory of the American people.”
This weekend’s shindig, which is expected to draw 70,000 guests, is the NRA’s largest show of strength since 20 children and 6 adults were killed by guns at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.
