NPR’s CEO Ousted After Right-Wing Sting Stunt

Is NPR the next Acorn? The public radio powerhouse is apparently the latest target of conservative rabble-rousers such as James O’Keefe, the undercover right-winger whose Acorn sting spelled major trouble for that institution, and Wednesday, NPR’s CEO Vivian Schiller took the fall.  —KA

The Guardian:

The chief executive of America’s National Public Radio (NPR) network has quit her post after a video sting by rightwing activists posing as campaigners for a fictitious Muslim group.

Vivian Schiller resigned as NPR chief executive a day after the release of a video of a lunch at a fashionable Georgetown restaurant in which fundraisers for the network and the imposters discussed racist tendencies in the Tea Party, as well as the anti-intellectual streak in Republicans, Jewish media “conspiracy”, and a potential $5m donation to public broadcasting.

it really says something about the level of intelligence in the US when people like o’keefe continue to be taken seriously when it has been proven that they’re full of shit.

and that schiller stepped down because of this nonsense - for fuck’s sake, if every republican-leaning media-person would step down THERE WOULD BE NO FOX NEWS!!

spineless liberals and childish conservatives. as soon as they don’t get their way, they cry like babies until liberals go “shhh… there, there - you can have everything you want”.
man… the stupidity!

Time for NPR to go

There was a time when PBS/NPR was relevant and provided important programs (especially kids programs like Sesame Street and Mr Rogers) that weren’t available on regular television. That has changed, as did PBS/NPR.

I never thought about it before, but I think I am at the position where I don’t want my taxes going to support NPR (though I do like supporting the arts).

The difference between NPR and Fox news is becoming less and less evident. As someone else mentioned, NPR is promoting the same pro-corporate, pro-military and pro-war agenda as all the other mainstream media outlets. You shouldn’t really expect anything different. After all, you can’t expect NPR to bite the hands that feed it.

I always wondered, why do we hear the same voices going back decades. While I enjoy some of the programs, I would love to get a gig like that. Wouldn’t anybody? It is almost as good as running for public office.  Get paid, have a nice life, but make sure that those that are paying you (through their tax dollars) don’t get the same benefits as you.

I say shame on NPR, not for this particular incident, but because for the last 10 years they lied and mislead the very people who depend on them for real news, especially regarding the war, health care, and the corporate corruption. Cut the cord.

“NPR and PBS at a national level tend to provide a bland variant of mainstream and conventional journalism, comparable to what’s on the commercial networks, especially on highly sensitive matters such as the economy and the U.S. role in the world. Public broadcasting is so obsessed with conservative criticism, even more than commercial news media journalists are, that it bends over backwards to appease the Right and appear “balanced.”
(Robert McChesney)

“In a media universe where you’re likely to find right-wing conservatives on ABC, Fox, or NPR, the facts don’t matter; only the framing. And in the hands of biased pundits posing as objective journalists, the framing is always going to be the same: pro-military, pro-government, and pro-war.”
(David Potorti)

This should not be a political issue. NPR is the only
radio programme with the best Journalist¬s in the
Country. She fell on her sword and resigned because
something happened on her watch. Vivian Schiller has
more honor and integrity in her thumbnail than does all
of James O’Keefe, Faux News and the GOP combined.

Over the years most of my memorable and enjoyable radio experiences were while tuned to NPR.. At least since Wolfman Jack and XROCK 80 El Paso-Juarez and Woai AM San Antonio have left the air!

A lot of the criticisms of NPR are deserved, yet most could be aimed at other radio (times ten) and also be true. Perhaps NPR is held to a tougher standard. I can name those NPR programs that I simply hate as well as those I eagerly anticipate daily! It’s for sure that NPR exec that let himself fall into the trap set
by those soulless idiots blew it and should be gone..

Our local NPR station has been owned and under the thumb of the Catholic Diocese for some time now. You may imaging how that has limited content..

NPR has been at the very least a dependable traveling companion on my frequent road trips across America.. Whatever else was on the air (you can’t imagine!) If I could find NPR I’d find something familiar from back home..

I think that’s what drives the hate directed towards NPR in so many places.. outside voices and music and opinion.. It just could be contagious!

Adios.

call me Roy
The payroll and ‘followers’ at NPR are too chicken-hearted to be commies.  That is their problem.  Not taking a stand.  It is just simple minded modern cultural drivel that NPR perpetuates for polarized Americans to flap their gums at each other about.

Right Wing Sting Stunt. Ha Ha Ha. NPR (National Pravda Radio) finally hung themselves. Just like Planned Parenthood and ACORN did. So for all you Socialist’s, you can toss those Che t-shirts in the trash, it looks like there will be fewer and fewer Commie Fests in you’re future.
