Nothing but the Bible for These South Carolina Inmates, ACLU Says

A South Carolina jail is denying its inmates access to any reading material other than the Bible, the ACLU says, quoting an email from a jail staffer. The group has filed a lawsuit challenging the policy at the Berkeley County Detention Center in Moncks Corner, S.C. —ARK

The Guardian:

Last year’s lawsuit quotes an email from a member of staff at the prison to Prison Legal News, which said that “our inmates are only allowed to receive soft back bibles in the mail directly from the publisher. They are not allowed to have magazines, newspapers, or any other type of books”. It charges that, since 2008, copies of Prison Legal News and books – including Protecting Your Health and Safety, which explains legal rights to inmates – sent to prisoners at the jail have been returned to sender. There is no library at the Berkeley County detention centre, the ACLU says, so that “prisoners who are incarcerated for extended periods of time have been deprived of access to magazines, newspapers and books – other than the Bible – for months or even years on end”.

If it was me locked up, my comment would be ‘Great.  Better quality toilet paper!’
Also, I would use the bible to justify abuse on the guards that work on the
sabbath.

There is an old saying that goes ‘the rules work both ways’ and sometimes, the
conservatives don’t realize that they are barking up the wrong tree.

I find it fascinating that this state has allowed prisoners to be denied access to the most fundamental reading right of all those incarcerated: Law books, so they have SOME way to mount a defense.

As far as I’m concerned South Carolina has been run by slave-owning anti-Americans and their descendants since the Revolution. Let’s not forget: South Carolina was first in treason as well, both in seceding and in firing on Fort Sumter.

Better black out the entire New Testament.

This is disgusting. The Bible as a guide has inspired more theft, murder and sexual outrages than about any other media. But, besides that it appears from the article that no mention is given to relgious writings outside of the Bible?

This is clearly unconstitutional, destructive to the human spirit and the use of government moneies to fund a specific religion, when in actual fact no religious thought should be funded by the taxpayers. That is what Churchs and other houses of worship are for.

I wish the country had allowed the South to secede. Then they could stew in their own juices.

Another self perpetuating industry….prisons.

Why try to retrain convicts into being more productive members of society?

Bad for the repeat business.

Could it be that the Warden himself can’t read?  Of one thing we can be sure:  He hates the people he’s supposed to take care of.
