No More Nuclear Power for Germany by 2022

Chancellor Angela Merkel cited the ongoing disaster at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi plant in turning Germany away from nuclear power.

German lawmakers voted to shut down all 17 of the country’s nuclear reactors over the next 11 years and pursue a renewable energy portfolio that would account for one-third of its energy resources. The vote marks a spectacular about-face on nuclear energy by Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government.

After the recent disaster in Japan and news that the Tennessee Valley Authority is planning to build six “mini” nuclear reactors near a waterway in eastern Tennessee, it’s good to see the leaders of Europe’s largest economy taking the renewed, justified fear of nuclear power seriously. —ARK

The Guardian:

German MPs have overwhelmingly approved plans to shut down the country’s nuclear plants by 2022, putting Europe’s biggest economy on the road to an ambitious build-up of renewable energy.

The lower house of parliament voted 513-79 for the shutdown plan drawn up by Angela Merkel’s government after Japan’s post-tsunami nuclear disaster. Most of the opposition voted in favour.

... By 2020, Germany wants to double the share of energy stemming from water, wind, sun or biogas to at least 35%. Until this year, nuclear energy accounted for a little less than a quarter of Germany’s power.

Do not fear, Germany. By 2022 the US will have installed it’s first nuclear reactor in low earth orbit (complying with all the safety requirements of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Nuclear Safety Commission, of course), so if you run out of energy, the US will be able to beam down electricity and/or nuclear radiation to any location you choose (with the exception of Israel re: the radiation).

There is no need to over complicate things as it turns out.

It’s like they are winning the war on terrorism and nobody gets hurt.

It’s a no-brainer.

I will wait in line as long as it takes behind all of the Japanese Chickadees to cuddle their snuggly butts.

They would probably say something like: ‘Stoppen Sie dass Sie Weirdo!’, but that’s O.K. because I just want to pinch their sweet cheeks sometimes.

This president appears dictatorial or fascist.  Capitalism has never been in this
form, at least since I have been alive.  It is definitely greed gone wild.

herronsmith, to answer your question:

Capitalism and it cozy cuddle with the boys and girls we elected to lead us in our nation’s capital.

Plain, pure and simple.

Why can’t the robbers in our government act as quickly?  Because they don’t care
who gets hurt as long as their pockets are lined with gold.

Isn’t it nice that the leadership of some countries is nurturing, sane and rational enough to set a course for what they believe is good for the people.

Americans are so short-changed in leadership that you have miscreants in positions of leadership who only want what benefits the top 2% of the population.

We now live under the disunited misanthropes of America.
