After negotiating various new agreements, Fox, CBS, NBC, ESPN and DirecTV will altogether pay close to $6 billion a year to broadcast NFL games to a football-addicted America.

The New York Times:

Fox’s average rights fee will jump to about $1.1 billion a year from $725 million in 2013, CBS’s payments will increase to nearly $1 billion from $625 million and NBC’s fees will increase to $950 million from $612 million. Add to that ESPN’s recent agreement. Three months ago it approved a 73 percent increase to $1.9 billion annually for eight years.

Taken together, the four networks — plus DirecTV, which pays $1 billion a year for its Sunday Ticket satellite package — will pay the N.F.L. more annually than any sports league has ever been paid. Of course, the previous record-holder was the N.F.L.

Daeggman,

Thanks for posting that Zappa lyric. Hadn’t heard it or
read it. It’s awesome.

Can’t remember the name of that Depession Era crook that when asked why he robbed banks he replied “‘cause that’s where the money is.” Well, if there’s so much dough out there to pay the NFL as much as it says above, why isn’t our oh, so concerned government taking a righteous chunk of this and using it for more constructive purposes? OH, yeah, I forgot; free enterprise and free markets and trickle down economics and “a rising tide lifts all boats” and, and, and…....will fix everything in the long run, just wait and see!

Frank put it beautifully all those yars ago…

I am gross and perverted
Im obsessed n deranged
I have existed for years
But very little had changed
I am the tool of the government
And industry too
For I am destined to rule
And regulate you

I may be vile and pernicious
But you can’t look away
I make you think Im delicious
With the stuff that I say
I am the best you can get
Have you guessed me yet?
I am the slime oozin out
From your tv set

You will obey me while I lead you
And eat the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that we don’t need you
Don’t got for help…no one will heed you
Your mind is totally controlled
It has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold

That’s right, folks..
Don’t touch that dial

Well, I am the slime from your video
Oozin along on your livinroom floor

I am the slime from your video
Can’t stop the slime, people, lookit me go

Do not watch TV. It will corrupt and more importantly corrupt your kids.  Disconnect the cable tv. It helps support Fox, CNN, and all the other liars. Use the cable for internet only and maybe phone. Get Netflix for movies. Cruise the net for news.

Television is our morality, our diet, our lifestyle
our beer, our church, our psychology,
our philosophy, our pilgrimage,
our drama, our joke, our
pain, our
government
our way of life,
our propaganda, our sex
our football, our baseball, our
pizza, our erectile dysfunctions, our
pharmacy, our heart disease, our wars,
our love, our sex, our beast, our dog, our master
our slave, our reaching out and touching
someone who feels like she is there
but is not, television is our
great big pie in the
sky, our fat
our
lovely
bowl of ice cream
sitting on the shelf
drinking a beer and playing
poker, television is our lover, our
entertainment as we sit dying in a chair
waiting to die in a chair, waking up every morning
barely being able to walk but bathing and shaving and
then sitting in a chair and watching TV and reading sleeping
and dozing off and coming back again, television commercials are
all part of the entertainment and what we see on TV is absolutely the
truth, television is our war, our peace, our piece, our Ike our
Hitler, our bong hit, our Prozac, our lover, our lost
loved ones, television is the office and all
its people on a shaky camera live
on a Saturday night, television
numbs us, infuriates us
television walks
our dogs
television brings us
every murder in every
corner of the world television
makes us scream television makes
us cry television makes us walk television
teaches us to walk, television raises our children
television kills our old folks, television walks on water
televisions breathes the word of Christ, television speaks Spanish
television speaks Spanish Jesus, television makes us cry television
makes us laugh television barks like a dog television gives us
Masterpiece Mystery and Frontline television give us
Jerry Springer and Dr. Phil television smokes dope
every day television gives us an old doddering
Ozzie that is painful to watch going
off the rails on a crazy train
television is our lover
our hot water
our pain
our
singing in the reign
of a king with a glass face
and a light coming through his one
great big glass eye his 69-inch HDMI
eye, television is the place we want to be
television is there when we pump our gas, television
is there when we are in the airports, television
is at our funerals television is at our birth
tv is the public pillory but that’s another story
