Arizona Moves to Curb Ethnic Studies

Ethnic studies programs are at risk if Gov. Jan Brewer signs a bill just passed by the Arizona Legislature.

A bill has been approved by the Arizona Legislature that would ban ethnic studies programs in the state, a move that comes on the heels of passage of an extraordinarily controversial anti-immigrant law.

The bill, sent to Gov. Jan Brewer to sign (or possibly veto, but let’s not delude ourselves here), makes it illegal for a school district to teach courses that “promote resentment of a particular race or class of people”—like racist white folks?  —JCL

Fox News:

The new bill would make it illegal for a school district to teach any courses that promote the overthrow of the U.S. government, promote resentment of a particular race or class of people, are designed primarily for students of a particular ethnic group or “advocate ethnic solidarity instead of the treatment of pupils as individuals.”

The bill stipulates that courses can continue to be taught for Native American pupils in compliance with federal law and does not prohibit English as a second language classes. It also does not prohibit the teaching of the Holocaust or other cases of genocide.

Schools that fail to abide by the law would have state funds withheld.

Wow, leave it up to fox news to sanitize what is really going on. The law just wants to ban ethnic studies. Problem is, there wouldn’t be a need for them if regular history classes were forced to teach about other races besides just big pivotal moments like slavery. I mean, I never even learned about Japanese internment camps in history, nor the Holocaust (that was left up to English class for some reason) and the thing is, there is more to each race than just slavery, jim crow, internemnt camps, etc but no one would know it because its not deemed important enough.

I fully support ethnic study classes. We won’t need them when history class stops having a white, rich, male slant.

I must be thick or something.  Would some one please tell me what is wrong with a bill that makes it illegal to teach the overthrow of the government, or to promote the resentment of a race or class of people, and insists that people should be treated as individuals?

Am I missing something here?  Am I not getting the spin?  Am I supposed to be outraged?  The Immigration law aside ( and I’ve no right to comment as I’m not from Arizona and not an American citizen) I can’t for the life of me see how the provisions of the law, as outlined above, lead to the curbing of ethnic studies.
Please tell me what I’m not getting- it just seems to me like media hype to crank up the rhetoric in order to sell copy or airtime.

Sad to say, it’s not just Jan Brewer.  Extend it just a little farther and you have George Bush invading countries about whose history and culture he had not one inkling of knowledge or respect. And before George, we weren’t all that hot on training graduate students to speak or read Arabic, to study the ancient cultures of Persia or Mesopotamia, or read the Rosetta Stone or transcribe the sagas carved in the walls of the pyramids. No.  These were “dead” cultures.  Better to major in Business Adminstratioin and make a ton of money.
Arisona is just the end of the line in this cult of ignorance known as “American supremacy.” It’s not so much that we are “free” that others hate us; it’s because we are such unmitigated snobs.

You just wait. Soon people of Mexican descent will be forced to carry special passes proving they’re citizens. Then they’ll have to have something stitched on to their clothes indicating that they’re Mexicans. It’s for their own good, we’ll be told: it’s just so the police won’t harass them. Then they’ll set up camps where Mexicans can be ‘assessed’ on whether or not they are actually legal residents. Jan Brewer should be ashamed of herself, but I don’t even think she’s alive so she’s probably not capable of it. This is the Republico/fascists at their worst.

Poor Obama!  What a rankling mess he inherited!  All these econo-racial ghosts and ghouls crawling out from under rocks in northern and southern States of Anguish that should know better but don’t!  Peevish, cantankerous, they have decided that “one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all” is a huge historical mistake and wish to return to “gun control”—meaning control by gun, not by law.
Where are the advocates of “free enterprise” to rush to the rescue of the underprivileged middle classes who can’t find profitable work to do and are turning on their dark-skinned neighbors, whether by land or by sea?
Well, the Lady with the Lamp has lived through worse.  Here’s hoping she can survive yet one more challenge.
