After sending an e-mail on March 16 telling members of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps to come “locked, loaded and ready” to Arizona’s border with Mexico, group President Carmen Mercer discovered that some from the radical anti-immigration group’s ranks were inclined to take her call to arms quite literally. Late last week, the news broke that Mercer and the MCDC’s board had decided to dissolve the national organization, but local chapters may still remain active.

Talking Points Memo:

On March 16, Minuteman president Carmen Mercer sent out an email to members, urging them to come to the border “locked, loaded and ready,” reports the Arizona Daily Star. She added: “You are strongly encouraged to exercise your rights and duty as an American citizen to carry a long arm and if challenged use it to defend the United States of America.” Mercer also suggested changing the group’s rules to allow members to track illegal immigrants and drug smugglers, rather than just reporting them to the Border Patrol.

Mercer told the Daily Star that the email had been prompted by anger at the federal government over health-care reform, and over the Department of Homeland Security’s claims that the border was secure.

Anytime RAE. You obviously sound like the enemy to me. I’m sure you’re just all
torn up over the death of that Arizona rancher on his OWN FUCKING LAND.

“Compared to the threat from their fellow Americans WITHIN their borders”

Oh, you mean the progressives? Yeah, I’d have to agree with you there…

The “Minuteman Civil Defense Corps” is badly confused. The members think they are a POSSE when actually they are a VIGILANTE group - the most recent in the long and colorful history of vigilante groups in America.

It would probably come as quite a shock to these “Minute-persons” to realize that the vast majority of their neighboring citizens NEVER cross into the USA legally or even willingly let alone plot to invade illegally.

Compared to the threat from their fellow Americans WITHIN their borders the threat from either Mexico or Canada is insignificant.

America needs civil defense for sure - but against its own crazies.

The latest issue of Skeptic magazine explores 10
psychological myths. The myth relevant to this
article is that venting one’s anger releases it.
Wrong. It inflames it leading to more anger and
greater aggressiveness.

What we say and how we say matters. To pretend words
spoken/written advocating violence is blowing off
steam and harmless is delusional or the
writer/speaker aware that she is walking a very fine
legal line and wishes to conceal the fact with an “ah
shucks, I wuz only kiddin and venting my anger (at
the nebulous) government (maybe more accurately those
elected officials with whom I disagree)...

Stop listening to trashy talk radio and television
and learn to think for yourself is one possible step
in a different direction.

Ms. Mercer’s famous last words:  “I was prompted by anger.” ...

All this anger stuff is coming straight out of the Judeo-Christian Old Testament—the angry God, righteous anger, plagues, punishment, guilt, grapes of wrath.  Those who think they are free of the ancient texts might well take another look at their online comments and look to see whether they are actually encouraging angry responses and blocking out thoughtful debate.

Or is the purpose of comments just to let people blow off steam, thereby serving as a healthy vent for latent violence?  You decide.
