On Tuesday, another parcel bomb aimed at a high-level European leader—this time German Chancellor Angela Merkel—was intercepted as it made its way to Germany from Greece. Greece was the point of origin where other pieces of explosive mail were discovered recently before or after detonation. —KA
This was a functional explosive device,” Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said at a later press briefing. “We haven’t determined how dangerous the explosive was, but it’s quite likely that if it was the same type of device as the package bombs in Athens, it could have caused not inconsiderable damage.”
The incident follows the arrest in central Athens yesterday of two men found with parcel bombs addressed to the Belgian embassy in Greece and to French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Small parcel bombs exploded today at the Swiss and Russian embassies in Athens, and police said at least another three packages addressed to foreign missions, including the German embassy, were disarmed.
