Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak once again defied calls to step down. During a 10-minute speech Thursday, Mubarak repeated that he will stay on until September elections, contradicting widespread reports that he would capitulate. Anderson Cooper just called Mubarak’s “lies” a “slap in the face.”

The crowd in Cairo’s Tahrir Square did not respond happily to the news that Mubarak doesn’t intend to go anywhere.

Here’s what we posted earlier Thursday, before Mubarak’s speech:

Mubarak’s Last Day on the Job?

Reports point to yes. Egyptian officials and the CIA have indicated that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will step down when he addresses his people Thursday night. According to The Washington Post, the demonstrators in Cairo’s Tahrir Square met the news with excitement, but also questions about the nature of their country’s post-Mubarak government.

For example, there was this exchange in the square, captured by the Post:

“Shall we go if the constitution is the same?”

“No!” the crowd yelled.

“Shall we go if the [ruling party] is still in its position?”

“No!”

“Even if Mubarak left the country, will we go?”

“No!”

“Tahrir until change.”

The only chance the people of Egypt had for real progressive change would have been with Mohammad Elbaradei. But there was no way the neocons in Israel would let that happen. And since AIPAC pull the strings on all matters concerning the Middle East in the West Wing and in the Senate, it didn’t happen.

All eyes are on the US. The world is waiting for the other shoe to drop. Why? Because US involvment in Egyptian politics is deep and well known. The US has armed the Egyptian military. It would not have the tanks, the tear gas, the helicopters, the weapons without the US. Obama’s words have absolutely no credibility in on this subject of democratic self-determination. The balance of power then weighs heavily on the side of America - and America waffles - not because it cares about the Egyptian people, but worried about its interests in the Middle East. The idea that it has no control flies in the face of recent wars - Iraq being the notable example. No, if the geopolitical landscape had been different - if there were oil to be obtained and increased military presence without endangering Israel which is its spoilt child, the US would be in there bombs blasting, shock and awe.

No matter who you are, Left or Right, you have to admit that the Obama admistration isnt handling this well. He appears to be trying to sail with the wind only to have it shift on him.

As Barack tacks this way and that he manages to offend everyone everywhere. Hopefully a few ingratiating bows by Obama will fix it. He will have to bow twice to The King of Saudi Arabia, surely once to the people of Egypt, maybe once to Israel, and possibly twice to Mubarak depending on the circumstances.

If Barry had some principle(any principle! take your pick!)... and would stick to it… we would be far better off. Instead Obama appears to be a day late and a dollar short all the time. But he is good at bowing and scraping so he might be able to retrieve some dignity and respect from the situation.

I am not asking my President to control events. That isnt what i am talking about. Control your own response, Mr President. And for God’s sake please control your administration. Think ahead, think of how your words reflect on us, how they effect others. This isnt about you, sir. Its about Egypt’s internal affairs, her international relationships, and our own national interest in those areas.

Recent comments by Director of National Intelligence James Clapper that Egypt’s branch of the Muslim Brotherhood movement is “largely secular” are typical of an administration that seems to have no understanding or principles to stand on. Was Clapper trying to whitewash a soon to occur Muslim Brotherhood takeover? Or is he just mentally a clutz?

This James Clapper fellow is unable to hide his lethargy and ignorance. This isnt the first time either.

But worse, the more competent people(Clinton) in the administration dont know what to do now.  Instead they must try to anticipate what some idiot in the admisnistration might say, or guess what Barry wants… by asking themselves “Which way is the wind going to blow next?”

Bad news for people everywhere in a
hyper-militarized-hyper-corporate age.
Is revolution even possible anymore?
Only tomorrow will tell.
