Full text of the travel alert from Mexico’s Foreign Ministry:
Following the adoption in the state of Arizona, United States, of the “Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act” (SB1070), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico makes the following recommendations to Mexican nationals who have scheduled trips to that entity, or that reside or study in its territory:
1. In recent days there have been public demonstrations and protests in different cities against the decision of the Governor of the state to sign the law. The events have always been peaceful. It is important to act with prudence and respect local laws.
2. The law will take effect 90 days after the end of the current session of the State Legislature. Thus, at this moment the legal framework remains unchanged. However, as was clear during the legislative process, there is a negative political environment for migrant communities and for all Mexican visitors.
3. Under the new law, foreigners who do not carry the immigration documents issued to them when entering the United States may be arrested and sent to immigration detention centers. Carrying the available documentation, even before the law comes into force, will help avoid needless confrontations. As long no clear criteria are defined for when, where and who the authorities will inspect, it must be assumed that every Mexican citizen may be harassed and questioned without further cause at any time.
4. The new law will also make it illegal to hire or be hired from a motor vehicle stopped on a roadway or highway, regardless of the immigration status of those involved. While these rules are also not yet in force, extreme caution should be used.
5. Mexican nationals who are in the United States, regardless of their immigration status, have inalienable human rights and can resort to protection mechanisms under international law, U.S. federal law, and Arizona state law. The functions of the five Mexican consulates in Arizona (Phoenix, Tucson, Yuma, Nogales and Douglas) include providing legal advice to all Mexicans who consider they have been subjected to any abuse by the authorities. Nongovernmental organizations have also announced their intention to support those in need.
6. Mexicans in Arizona requiring consular assistance may use the toll-free consular protection phone number, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week: 1-877-6326-6785 (1-877-63CONSUL). The consular network in Arizona has a permanent telephone service, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Report thisDon’t forget, this is only in Arizona. I’m guessing, nationwide GOP poobahs are secretly cringing, for the reasons you mention. While W did get more Hispanic votes than other GOP candidates, it was still a significant minority of the total. As for the black vote, I am still totally baffled by a group that would support a party, the Dems, that has caused them so much misery over the years.

Ironic isn’t it? In 2000 and 2004 the GOP could count on significant Hispanic support. But to cater to the racists and paranoids in their party they have alienated the LARGEST minority in the USA. GOPers weep and moan that Black Americans support for Democrats has gone from the 75% region to the +90% region.
Now they’ve gone and alienated Hispanics.
It’s not only not good law, it’s not even smart politics.

Look there’s a simple solution. Why is everyone so impractical? Just pass a law that every Mexican in Amrica has to sew a brown enchilada on their sleeve. You could also issue special ‘Latino passes’ like the Nazis did for the Jews. Look how well that worked! Problem solved.
This is pure politics played by a woman who looks like a mummy someone dug up and has a brain to match. It’s an attempt to resuscitate the Republican Party which is on life support at this point. The sheer hypocrisy of it is breathtaking: everyone knows that the wasps want the Mexicans in America slaving away in agriculture and the service industry because their Dickensian wages keep everyone else’s wages down. That is their real role and that’s why the Republicans have never done a single effective thing to stop them coming. But that doesn’t mean they won’t play the xenophobia card and create hatred against these people in the hope of reaping some political reward. The law itself is a throwback to the pass laws in South Africa which only proves that all Fascists think alike.

I heard a terrific suggestion today:
San Fransisco has asked its citizens to boycott Arizona.
San Fransisco is a “sanctuary city”, whatever that is.
The Governor of Arizona should offer to give any person, extended family included, who is fearful of being hurt by this new law a one way ticket, no questions asked, and free of charge, to San Fransisco where they can seek sanctuary as guests of the city.
I mean, how cool would that be? Where would you rather live, under a bridge in Yuma, Arizona or under the Golden Gate?

Only a fool would not want a worker that does the job better or at a cheaper
Report thisprice. That opportunity is being offered to 5 million Mexicans that enter the US
each year illegally, their unemployment rate is zero. American workers can
overcome that competition by also doing the job better or at a cheaper price. If
they cannot, it would be best if they went back to school or tightened their belt.
The law of supply and demand cannot be altered by closing the Mexican border.
That is why Over 30 million illegals immigrants in the US are dancing the cha cha
on the way to the bank.

Here is ANOTHER post I agree with! We have to stop meeting like this.
ITW:
“Ironic” says it all. But laughable is also true. Her comes Mexico telling its citizens, “If you go to a foreign country, you better have some ID.” What a concept!!
And if they do have their passports with them, which is pretty much a requirement for ALL post 9/11 travel everywhere these days, what kind of “harassment” can they expect from the Tucson police?
Does anybody really think the police will have the time or the inclination to stop every brown person they see and ask for papers?
A big ado about nothing.

So who do they think the illegal immigrants in Arizona are? Norwegians? Africans? French? Or could it be, let’s see, Mexicans and Central Americans?
That’s not profiling, it’s reality. Get over it, and enter the country legally. Or doesn’t the law in the USA count? Try entering Mexico illegally and see what happens to you. You won’t get food stamps and free medical care there.

not all Mexicans coming to the US are hungry - I work with Mexican fine and
Report thisperforming artists who regularly come her as paid professionals - though none would
ever consider staying here to work in menial service jobs, and certainly not with
lives in Mexico awaiting their return, where they are respected artists, virtually all
are harassed upon entry on the assumption that they intend to stay illegally - and
not infrequently they are detained long enough to miss connecting flights - the
irony is that the Mexican government provides for their fine and performing
artists more per capita support than does the US - more in keeping with the rest
of the civilized world - so, before getting too high on your capitalist paradise, be
aware that in large parts of the civilized world it is viewed as the most philistine
nation of all time

I agree that the new Arizona law is pretty draconian, but the Calderon regime, one of the most brutal in Latin America, should worry about providing jobs for his collapsing country. In December Calderon sent the army to shut down the country’s biggest workers’ union, leaving over 40,000 people without work in one night. The next Mexican Revolution must occur, and hopefully inspire American workers to radicalize as well.

Montezuma`s revenge was once the diarrhea of Americans when they visited Mexico, but his revenge has now been upgraded. He is now sending 50 million hungry peons across the Mexican border. The ancestors of murderous Cortes will know how it feels to be enslaved by working long hours for little pay. It took many years, but Montezuma has finally gotten his long awaited revenge.

The Mexico alert is interesting coming from a country where the police have a history of murdering illegal immigrants from Guatemala.
