Mexican State Legislatures Make Abortion Illegal

Anti-abortion protesters march in Mexico City in 2007 prior to a decision by the Supreme Court to allow abortions in the capital. After a series of state legislature decisions, Mexico City remains the only place in Mexico where abortion is legal.

A disturbing trend is arising in Mexico, as state legislatures are banning abortion in a wave of individual state decisions. Abortion rights advocates say the trend will force women to more dangerous and clandestine forms of abortion.  —JCL

The Los Angeles Times:

Abortion rights activists dreamed of legislative victories across Mexico after the Supreme Court last year upheld a Mexico City law allowing abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Instead, the opposite has happened.

In state after state, antiabortion forces have won changes to local constitutions declaring that life begins at conception and explicitly granting legal rights to the unborn. In all, 17 state legislatures have approved such measures, often with minimal debate, since the August 2008 court decision validating Mexico City’s law.

The Gulf coast state of Veracruz last month became the most recent state to do so. Its measure also called on the Mexican Congress to consider a similar amendment to the nation’s Constitution.

There really should be a law against legislators voting for what their constituents want.

There is in America, I think.

What is good for America should be good for Mexico.

And you’re Pro-Choice, right?

That you’re ignorant is obvious, but I’m wondering about the other.

We are drowning in over population. The Pope is irresponsible to promote procreation without regard to need. The population of the United States would not have grown except for it being used as a dumping ground for other peoples irresponsible reproduction.

Secondly women should have the absolute right to decide to carry a pregnancy or not. It should not be the choice of a third party.

Thirdly can anyone explain how it is “Pro-Life” to have babies that are going to starve to death, or be in poor health. How is it “Pro-Life” to fill up the world with people so that no other life forms have a place to exist except germs?

We have the ability to deal with reality, get rid of the wizard behind the smoke screen.

Oh, how terrifying, the people are asserting themselves. This is indeed “disturbing”. Well, folks, that’s what you get when you wage a long and merciless war on faith: BLOW BACK. People would have outgrown it, but no, we had to wage a war on Catholicism all over Mexico, South, and Central America. Nice one neoliberal globalist imperialists. Way to go. Just what we all needed.

This should be no surprise since both Indigenous Peoples and Catholics in Mexico support life.

This won’t last long, Mexico will probably erupt next year in social revolution. The country has a pretty strange clock: 1810- War Of Independence, 1910- Mexican Revolution, 2010-?

No worries.  The women can slither over the border and
defecate their fetuses on American soil; automatic US
citizenship and live off the child’s benefits.

Oh! great!  Just what Mexico needs - a higher birthrate.  This is the Batshitican’s fault.  Is there is a more duplicitous, morally bankrupt, corrupt, business in the whole wold?  I think not.

every single legislator who voted should be outed and hounded by the media and internet outlets until they personally adopt an unwanted baby…....everyone of them, every nine months for the rest of their lives.
