McCain Blames Wildfires on Immigrant Smoke Signals (Video)

While five wildfires burn up Arizona, Sen. John McCain has decided now is the perfect time for demagoguery.

Over the weekend the senator said immigrants crossing the border “have set fires because they want to signal others. They have set fires to keep warm and they have set fires in order to divert law enforcement agents and agencies from them.”

McCain is apparently keeping the “substantial evidence” for these claims to himself. A spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service, meanwhile, was asked whether there was such evidence. “Absolutely not, at this level,” was his reply.  —PZS

ABC News via Political Wire:

Tom Berglund, spokesman for the federal group managing the Wallow fire that McCain toured Saturday, said the cause of the fire has been determined as “human,” specifically an “escaped campfire,” meaning the campfire sparked beyond the confines of the rocks containing it.

Two “subjects of interest” have been spoken to, but as of now, no suspect has been named, Berglund said. When asked if there is substantial evidence that some fires were caused by illegal immigrants, as McCain said at a news conference Saturday, Berglund said: “Absolutely not, at this level.”

“There’s no evidence that I’m aware, no evidence that’s been public, indicating such a thing,” he said.

It isn’t so much of a lie as not answering the question that was asked.  Its a very common tactic that politicians use.  Obama is a master at it.  When asked a question and you don’t know the answer or don’t want to say the answer, give the answer to a different but somewhat similar question that allows you to say a talking point.  Ham-fisted McCain tries to do that here. He doesn’t want to answer that climate change might be a factor, so he tries to answer a question about illegal immigration.  He does it so poorly that it seems as though he is blaming this fire on illegal immigrants, but he’s really blaming only some fires on illegal immigrants, which they may very well be the cause, but he’s not answering the question about the big fire, the fire he had just toured before the press conference.  Strangely, most of the time, reporters will seem to not notice that politician didn’t really answer the question but answered another question.

They do lie a lot too, and don’t often get called on that either.  Politicians are social slicksters, masters of bullshit.  Even when they do get called on a lie they will just tweak the definition of some words analyze it to death and change the clear straight forward meaning into some fancy interpretation.  When you hear Obama say, “now go back and look at what I said,” you know that’s whats about to happen.

McCain sucks at being a slickster politician, he would have been much better off to stay as a honest, straight-shootin maverick, and he might have been President.

Maybe now those who shrugged off the evidence of dementia so obvious in Old John’s selection of Sarah as his running mate will reconsider. Or will it take the day that is inevitably coming, when McCain will disappear late some night, with a D.C.-wide alert failing to find him as expected, dazed, lost, wandering the streets, mumbling to himself, ‘I am a US Senator?’?

Only to have him turn up, finally, in his bathtub, attempting to swim to Vietnam, to return to his POW camp, and recapture his ‘good old days’, when he was somebody.

A new Republican’t tactic- lie… and then, when asked,
say there is no evidence that what you have just said
is true (so you can cover your behind later).
Brilliant!
