Mass Kidnappings Trouble Iraqi AuthoritiesPosted on Apr 4, 2007Iraqi police are searching for the victims of mass kidnappings that occurred Wednesday. At least 43 people were abducted in two areas of Iraq. Some of the gunmen responsible for the attacks reportedly wore uniforms resembling those of Iraqi security forces.

This is the fly in the ointment of Bush’s “surge” policy: the security forces, police and military alike, are so heavily suffused with sectarian passions that they can never be trusted to fall into line. They are no doubt effective when paired, as they are in Baghdad, with U.S. soldiers. It’s quite another matter when those U.S. soldiers are not around in other parts of the country. Half a million U.S. troops might solve that problem. If they existed.
