Under police escort, U.S. marshals leave in a van with Jared Loughner after his arraignment in Phoenix on Monday.

After being wrestled down and arrested at the scene of the fatal shooting in Tucson earlier this month and after a number of witnesses said he was the shooter, Jared Loughner entered a not guilty plea in a brief appearance at a Phoenix federal court Monday.  —KA

USA Today:

Loughner, 22, at times scrunched his face and at others laughed openly as his defense attorney, Judy Clarke, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Wallace Kleindienst discussed the case at a brief arraignment hearing.

[...] Loughner is charged with one count of attempted assassination of a member of Congress in connection with the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz. He is also charged with two counts of attempted murder of a federal employee in the wounding of Giffords aides Pam Simon and Ron Barber.

i thought truthdig was supposed to be a more reliable news source?
loughner himself did not enter a not guilty plea.

“Loughner stood quietly as U.S. District Judge Larry A. Burns entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf Monday in federal court in Phoenix.”

“Loughner didn’t speak at the brief arraignment at a courthouse in Phoenix. The court entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf.”

“Asked for his plea, Loughner was silent. The court entered a not-guilty plea on his behalf.”

The way this story is introduced makes me think that the writer “KA” doesn’t understand the mens rea element in criminal law.  A guilty mind requires a sound mind, and there’s plenty of evidence on youtube to suggest that Loughner was not in possession of one.  Law and order undertones on Truthdig?  What the hell?

What is depressing is that here is an article about a real terrorist,
home grown, who gets to go into court and plead ‘not guilty’.
gets to go back to his cell with a bed and get 3 square meals a
day and exercise.

Underneath this post is one about Bradley Manning, a true
patriot who has embarrassed some politicians, military fools and
business crooks by exposing their criminal actions and
intentions, who can only wear his under way and his visitors are
beginning to be detained.

This boy was suppose to have been normal at age 20.  Something terrible happened to him between then and now, what was it?

I do hope the truth will be allowed to come out, but it is highly unlikely.
