Rich Little Treads Lightly at Press Dinner

Instead of hearing the truth(-iness) from the likes of Stephen Colbert, organizers of this year’s White House Press Correspondents’ Association dinner played it safe (read: boring) by inviting comedian Rich Little to entertain President Bush and the assembled flock of journalists Saturday night.

AP via My Way News:

Best known for his impersonations of Richard Nixon and Johnny Carson, [Little] was the featured comedian Saturday night for the glitzy dinner with President Bush, Cabinet secretaries, foreign dignitaries, Hollywood celebrities and members of the press.

Unlike previous comedians at the dinner, he had no competition from Bush, who at times has shown a deft comedic touch himself in his annual monologue.

Bush said it was important for people in Washington “to learn to laugh” and that the ability for a nation to poke fun at its leaders is good for democracy.

The real mystery here is how Stephen Colbert ever got invited last year, in the first place.  Well, no mystery, really: right wingers HAVE no sense of humor. When they watched “The Colbert Report” they thought he really WAS one of them.

Of course Rich Little did little jokes about the president, but since his name means less and less to the general public he has to earn some money somehow, to say that the press went to the other side, I do not see that, the press reports news from either side and they must be somewhat netural when news is to be reported, that is to say the thing about impeachment has to be brought about by demostrations by the people, demostrations are what ended the war in Viet nam.

Mr. Bush, you’re wrong ! it was important for the people in Washington “to learn to CRY and to LIE” instead of “to laugh” as you mentioned.

Rich Little ???????????????????? The ability for a nation to poke fun at it’s leaders is good for Democracy ????????????? At least Rich Little might do a better impersonation of competent leader .
The truth is that there is nothing to poke fun at anymore . I hang my head every time a new revelation about this ‘Administration’(???????) of CRIMINALS becomes the lead story over and over . Nothing that they do has any relevance to the needs of the country . The only good news about Bush and the Bushies will arrive on their departure .
They would be ot of office already if the Senate or Congress had even one vertebrae between them . We need a change in our Constitution - The citizens of this country should have the right to demand an impeachment or better yet a recall of the entire administration in office . This is Our Country - we need to take it back , because the weaklings in congress will never succeed in any major changes in the Cheney administration . This country is ruled by a bunch of spineless worms who answer to Corporate America - and we as citizens are slowly , but cruelly being bled to DEATH .

Well Royalty and the court jesters{reporters}have had their Royal Ball again.I may be stupid but when you are trying to dig for stories that are negative and or trying to put somebody in high political office in jail how do these get togethers help.If reporters would stop kissing the ass of the politicians and get about the business of reporting to the American people what is going on with their government maybe there would not be 3200 dead Americans in Iraq.In my reading of the job of the press it is supposed to be an adverserial relationship. To my mind the press shows everyday why it is not capable of doing its job and the American people seem to feel it is alright. We are probably the least informed people in the free world and these get togethers between politicians and reporters reinforce why we are so woefully informed.

This is part of the problem. The press should not be sitting down getting cordial with those in the administration they’re supposed to cover. What about conflict of interest? Especially since this is not the only event!! Awards and dinners are fine, however I would think that the sources investigating misdeeds and corruption would like to keep a certain level of social separation from those they are investigating. But I guess that’s how it works when the press itself has been corporatized.

Our President not only has no character, he also can not stand contradiction and more so when it is based upon his failure to obey the laws he swore to protect. It is no wonder he only attends events where any embarassing references are virtually guaranteed not to be brought up.
