‘Whites Only’ High School Reunion Party Stirs OutragePosted on Sep 2, 2012
A Louisiana high school class’ plan for its 40th reunion is being met with outrage after a letter leaked on the Internet revealed that a party was for only white graduates. Segregated class reunions are actually nothing new for the St. Martinville Senior High School Class of 1973, having been a tradition for nearly four decades. But this year, the class was finally set to make some progress (albeit way overdue), as the reunion was supposed to be a nonsegregated event. (Welcome to the latter half of the 20th century, maybe?) And yet, somehow, a letter inviting only white graduates to a reunion after-party was still sent out. Michael Kreamer, the school’s principal, said he was “a little disappointed” to hear the news. “I don’t think that it looks good for the school, but ... it has nothing to do with St. Martinville Senior High. So I hope people don’t take that the wrong way.” —Posted by Tracy Bloom.
