Legendary political cartoonist Paul Conrad died Saturday morning at the age of 86. An artist who won the Pulitzer Prize three times, Conrad was the cartoonist for the Los Angeles Times for 30 years and a proud member of Richard Nixon’s “enemies list.”

In Conrad’s honor, Truthdig will be publishing a selection of his cartoons and commentary on his works in the coming weeks.

Los Angeles Times:

His unyielding liberal stance, delivered as savage black-and-white harpoons, bedeviled Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and others in power while shedding an uncompromising light on social injustices. He drew for The Times for nearly 30 years.

I thank Conrad for his support and for pissing them off like no one else could. His work embodied the gift of the mastery of both line and value. Fearless talent is not to be interfered with, but recognized for what it is and simply turned loose. That’s why Conrad earned three Pulitzers.

How we loved Paul Conrad! The Editorial page in the LA Times was always the first
place we used to turn to when he was their cartoonist. Such a genius to be able to
express the essence of the issues facing our world with a few pen strokes. So glad
you plan to commemorate him with examples of his work to continue to inspire
us.

I don’t know about this guy, but that cartoon…..  I
bet the pay offs are understood a lot differently in
Afghanistan then is portrayed in the press, as in,
that’s what the sour, beer drinking solider on the
ground calls them.  Regardless, how are the people
paying bribes any less corrupt then the people
accepting bribes, if that what this is?  You can’t
have your cake and eat it too.  Oh’ bummer!

Paul Conrad was THE reason to read the LA Times when I was a kid in the 70’s; the way he relentlessly attacked Nixon was beyond words. His opinions helped form my own and he will be sorely missed.  But his greatest gift to us all, his huge body of work, will always be around for us to kick Nixon and Reagan around for a long, long time.  Thank you Paul Conrad, thank you from the bottom of my heart and soul.
