Leaving Arizona: Tucson Group Pushes SecessionPosted on May 10, 2011
Organizers in Tucson and surrounding Pima County have launched a petition drive that would put their plan to secede from Arizona on the ballot in 2012, a movement born out of liberal disgust with the conservatism of Phoenix and other northern neighbors. The plan is undoubtedly a long shot, and the creation of a “Baja Arizona” would be the first successful split since West Virginia branched off during the Civil War. But at the very least, the “Start Our State” movement sends a signal to the country that not all Arizonans support measures like the immigrant-targeting SB 1070 or the escapades of Maricopa Country Sheriff Joe Arpaio. —KDG

Really, JEA? i’m as bleeding-heart as you’re gonna find and i haven’t noticed that. i, for one, would be more than happy for parts of my state(everything outside of salt lake city) to secede. and when people in texas and alaska talk about secession i root for them. i wouldn’t miss those crazy asses at all. and by the way, there’s a huge difference between seceding from a state and seceding from the union.

It’s pretty darn hypocritical that conservatives who want their states to secede are routinely portrayed as crazies on liberal websites, but these folks are portrayed as simply ‘frustrated.’
