Kanellos the Protest Dog

Kanellos rests in front of a group of students at a protest in central Athens in late 2009.

A stray dog named Kanellos has apparently been on the front lines of most major protests in Greece over the past two years. He is also the focus of a blog, the subject of a recent Guardian photo essay, and the inspiration for several YouTube video homages.

The dog, whose name in Greek means cinnamon, is shown in some of the hairiest situations as police spray tear gas and get violent with demonstrators.

Check out the Guardian photo essay of the courageous anti-capitalist canine, as well as a video of Kanellos the protest dog in action:

Maybe he belongs to one of the police. The policeman just brings him along.

The dog in the photo is not Kanellos, it’s called Louk, short for Loukanikos (sp?) which is Greek for sausage because he likes them.

The dog in the video is Kanellos, and he is now buried in the ground of the university. Both dogs look different.

The dogs have collars because it means they have been immunised etc by a local charity.
