Justice Dept. to Investigate Neighborhood Watch Shooting of Unarmed Black TeenPosted on Mar 20, 2012
Neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman said he shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in self-defense, although a 911 operator told Zimmerman not to follow the teenager through a suburban Orlando, Fla., gated community. Martin can be heard on another 911 recording screaming for help. (These calls can be heard on the BBC page linked below.) The Justice Department has announced that it will investigate the February shooting. —PZS

Report thisZimmerman will get charged with something or other pretty soon, Z was taken in

It wasn’t just the “beat cops” that were in on this.

tic,
It isn’t a ‘beat’ officers job to determine what merits trial and what doesn’t, that power resides with the district attorney and I do not believe that office has commented on the issue….yet.
I see the race dividers are all over this issue while other in your face racist issues are swept under the rug.

PH—- not really how it works. we have a rather large number of people devoted to
investigating and determining whether there is cause sufficient for initiating an
indictment and trial.
Report thistry to hold a trial w/o establishing that there’s reasonable cause that a crime is
provable and some judge is likely to deny the request.

As the truth comes out it seems both of these individuals are at fault, I believe a trial is required to sort out the guilt of each.

Surfboy; MLK once said, “none of are free until all of us are free!” You seem to imply that it is totally unacceptable to kill 17 year old Trayvon Martin without a trial, but ok to kill 16 year old Abdul Rahman al Awlaki?
Let’s cut through the racist bull shit; Muslim Men and boys are in season. Your callous statement above drives the point home; while Blacks are “officially” out of reason these days there are racist like Zimmerman who occasionally engage in Poaching. Yes, Surfboy, the connection is there, you like Mrfreeze just refuse to see it.

I guess we should agree to disagree on this one mrfreeze. I consider Obama and Eric Holder’s unlawful killing of a 16 year old relevant to their federal investigation of Zimmerman violating this 17 years old boy’s right to live.
If you don’t see the connection, that is ok; but don’t pretend it does not exist.

vector56 - This story has NOTHING to do with the administrations other problems with killing whomever.
Can you possibly stay on-topic?
This is about the fundamental nature of the SYG law in FL. That’s the issue. If more people could simply focus on one thing at a time, perhaps ridiculous SYG laws wouldn’t exist in the first place and we wouldn’t have to have these pleasant conversations.
The bottom line here is that, unless the law is somehow overturned, the shooter will ultimately go free. Why would you or anyone expect things to turn out differently considering this happened in FL? Furthermore, why even bother brining up what the administration will or won’t do?

“I not only hope that Zimmerman becomes bubba’s wife in some prison, but I hope the entire idea of ARMED neighborhood watch groups is put to rest for good.”
Maani; from your above comment I assume you want to see Zimmerman “butt-Rapped”? If he is found guilty, not only should we take his freedom for what is left left of his life, but lets give him something extra and brutal. While Zimmerman is being “rapped”, would you like to watch?
mrfreeze;
Obama’s Justice department in investigating Zimmerman for declaring himself “Judge Jury And Executioner” of 17 year old Trayvon Martin is somewhat hypocritical when this administration just murdered the 16 year old son of Anwar Al-Awlaki.
Abdul Rahman al Awlaki, was just as much a “boy” as Trayvon Martin; I wonder if Maani would like to see his killers become “bubba’s wife in prison”?
mrfreeze;
This has little to do with Obama; it is about equal treatment under the law. Anwar Al-Awlaki’s father begged Obama not to kill his son; even went to court to stop the killing. Obama answered this man’s pleads by not only killing his son, but his 16 year old grand son as well!
Harry Reid said that all three of the US citizens who were killed without a trial “deserved it” (including the 16 year old).
Like Pavlov’s dogs we respond to the “low hanging fruit” that this classic example of “traditional” American racism presents. The Media, the politicians all race to take on the role of MLK, while synonymously turning a blind eye to the countless faceless human beings who worship a “lessor” God (Allah) that are being murdered daily. You may not see the connection, but it is there lurking in the background.

You know what so disturbs me these days?
I spent a bit of time listening to programs about this particular tragedy and the massacre in Afghanistan and I’ll I heard were apologists and rationalizations and a torturing of reality all in a (failed) attempt to justify or “soften” the ugly truth: there are a lot of murdering scum out there. Overseas we’ve given 10’s of thousands of our people the right to commit murder (and they have on our behalf) and we have the murders here (fully supported by a population of sheeple afraid of their own shadows…and armed to the teeth). WTF is going on?
If any anti-establishment movement wants to make a powerful statement in today’s America, they might start by organizing a boycott of FL. Send a clear message to the hillbillies that run that shit hole that NO ONE is going to be visiting there for a long, long time. Perhaps then, some sanity might return to that god-forsaken state.

WTF does President Obama have to do with the fundamental issue here: that the SYG law in FL is absurd and that it was bound to end in such an ugly tragedy.
If you want to take a swipe at the President, you could find far better and more appropriate places to do so. Hate him if you want, but let’s try to focus on the real evil here…and it isn’t the President…..

All that being said, what do we do? There has to be self defense laws in this
Report thiscountry. We cannot depend on a corrupt and indifferent police force, anywhere to
help us. Thats not to say that this man was not wrong, he was and should be put
under the jail. But too often we let incidents such as this one push us too far to
the other side of the debate on matters like gun control, and self defense. We
cannot throw the baby out with the bath water. We have to see this for what it is; A

So let me get this straight…. In Florida, I can go out and stalk someone who scares me (AKA; someone I say I “perceive” as a threat), kill them, then go home and sleep soundly. The next day and every day thereafter I can do it again and again as long as there are no witnesses to my actions. Is this correct? At what point do the police and lawmakers begin to consider that there may be a flaw in this thinking? Unbelievable!

It is a shame that the police were listining to the 911 tapes and had acted quicker or would it have made a difference because the police (in a lot of cases) are race minded to begin with.
A man has a smoking gun a man lies on the pavement dead and has no gun, he is young and he only wieghs 140 lbs.
George Zimmerman was a big man with an ax to grind a wanabe cop but a dangerous wanabe cop and he commited premitated murder because he took the gun with him when he went after Martin.
When will the south change their hated against black people and especially black men.
Al Sharpten is doing what he should because if no one learns about this racist thing it will be swept under the run like a lot of southern states do.

This incident takes us back to the days of lynchings
Report thisand hangings which eventually stopped in the 1960’s
when local police failed to investigate. How come
this man is not in jail? It’s the white man’s fear of
the black man syndrome. It’s all over the cowboy gun
toting south. A black man get out of line, shoot him
and claim self defense. Fear of any nonwhites is the
reason they made the second amendment. That’s because
of all of the inhumane things they did to people of
color like stealing land, rape, and slavery. If
blacks and Native Americans had guns a lot of this
shit would have turned out differently. So here we
are in 2012, a unarmed black teenager gets shot and
killed in the south and the cowboy who shot him
claimed fear and self defense gets the benefit of the
doubt. So just like the 1960’s the Federal Government
has to step in to investigate. Self defense isn’t
going to work this time. They can’t cover up the
truth like they use to. In America we die by the
sword because everyday we live by it. But this time
justice will prevail!

I have an alarm for my home. If it goes off, and the private security man shows
Report thisup, and finds me being attacked in my neighbour’s yard, he cannot do anything
about it because he is only contracted to protect my property.
Where does a private citizen get the ability to run someone down, through a
neighbourhood, crossing private property that does not belong to them, then
eventually shoot someone? ADT, or Protection One can’t do that. Maybe because
he was the “watch captain” he has the legal ability to hunt people on other

I would look at my community agreement, as opposed to some “stand your ground” law.

Apparently, Martin’s girlfriend was on the phone with him when the incident took place, and she has said that Zimmerman’s claim of self-defense is simply absurd: and her timeline of the incident matches the 911 tapes. If Martin was unarmed - which is absolutely clear, and has not even been challenged by Zimmerman - by what rubric can he claim “self-defense” in using a gun against an unarmed 17-year-old boy? Even were it true that they “scuffled” at some point (which has not been substantiated), that would STILL not give rise to a need to use a gun against an unarmed boy.
True, a person is innocent until proven guilty. But given the circumstances, it is outrageous, as others have pointed, that Zimmerman has not been charged and is not in jail. There is NO interpretation of this incident that excuses the use of a gun. None. This is WHY the Justice Dept. has stepped in, and why a grand jury has been convened.
I not only hope that Zimmerman becomes bubba’s wife in some prison, but I hope the entire idea of ARMED neighborhood watch groups is put to rest for good.

One more sad example of the “fortress state” where everyone is regarded as guilty and expected to prove his/her innocence. Even those people least willing to face the truth of the mental illness at work at the heart of our country must by now be aware that free-floating hatred, fear and violence is ruining our lives and we have to find the wills and the skills to constitute a nation where we can all live together with liberty, equality and justice.
Report thisSadly, it appears the government is part of the “fortress mentality” so the free, creative ideas and energies will have to come from us, the ordinary and not so ordinary citizens.

Heartbreaking…and yet so many on the Right want to insist that we’re in a post-
racial society. That said, the ridiculous Stand Your Ground law must be repealed;
it is a monstrous piece of legislation sponsored and backed by the National Rifle
Association that encourages every cop wannabe to claim his moment of glory and,
more ridiculously, if there are no witnesses, the shooter merely has to claim that
the shooting was in self-defense, and it’s up to the victim – even if the victim is
dead – to prove that he or she was no threat. What a law. Unreal.

Racism is a pernicious evil. It is also a hate crime when a man filled with racial hatred shoots a defenseless seventeen year old young black man.
The 911 recordings of the incident clearly indicate that George Zimmerman attacked Trayvon Martin after stalking him [even leaving his vehicle to track him on foot] like a hunter stalking his prey.
The Florida law that allows anyone to shoot another human being to and then claim it was self defense is ludicrous.
Particularly in this case wherein the 99 recordings clearly indicate George Zimmerman instigated ALL of the contact with the victim of his crime.
Why is this man not in jail. Why does he still have his freedom after murdering an innocent young man walking home from the store. Trayvon Martins only crime was “being black in America”.
Racism is a pernicious evil, it eats away at the spiritual center of those infected with it, corroding their moral core like a parasitic worm devouring it from the inside out until there is nothing left but raw hatred based solely upon the fanciful imagination of the racist.
In this instance it led to a hate crime and the death of an innocent seventeen year old young man who made the fateful mistake of traveling out at night to the store for skittles and ice tea and whose only crime was being black in America.
