Israeli Settlers Destroying Palestinians’ Olive Trees

AP / Nasser Ishtayeh

A Palestinian woman picks olives from trees farmers say were cut overnight by Jewish settlers, near the Jewish settlement of Eli in the northern West Bank village of A Laban al-Sharkiyeh.

Olive trees are a symbol of the long history of many Palestinian families, and some Israeli settlers have now launched assaults on the trees, cutting down and torching them and at times attacking farmers in what many observers believe is part of a crescendo of settler militancy. —JCL

The Guardian:

Eighty-year-old Rasmia Awase had left the best olive trees until last. She and her family had already harvested most of their crop when they went to a small plot near their home in Luban a-Sharqiya on Saturday morning.

Here were 40 trees that Awase had planted and tended herself, and they were now, two decades later, at their peak – the most productive of all the trees, which support 37 members of the extended family.

But Awase found that someone had got there before them and had chopped down the trees, leaving stumps in the ground and branches scattered about the plot. The family blame hardline Jewish settlers from the nearby Eli settlement.

It seems that Israel doesn’t have a limit to how low it sinks.
This is disgusting.

“Only someone looking for a fight could see sarcasm in the difference between your version of Arafat’s words and mine.”

The difference being that yours are fake and mine are real.

“Too bad for you”

Since when is reality a bad thing?

Israel OFF the planet NOW!

The United States of America must stand against the powerful group that
adamantly supports the proposition that the U.S. must protect, provide for, and
defend the state of Israel.  It is time that Israel managed on its own.  It is time that
Israel seeks peace with its neighbors.

For Israelis to chop down olive trees carries more than pure symbolism.  It is
undisguised hate for anyone who is not Israeli.  So be it.  Let them choose their
own path and let not one U.S. penny help them in the future.

That’s it, folks.

Keep poking at the wounds… ensure the hostility, hatred and fear flows like the bright red blood that’s sure to follow.

Neither side would know what to do with themselves if peace is ever achieved. All any of them knows is how to hate. An ongoing, never-ending tragedy. So sad.

Join the 2010 Olive Harvest Campaign

August 29, 2010

At a time of increasing settler violence in the West Bank, the International Solidarity Movement is issuing an urgent call for volunteers to participate in the 2010 Olive Harvest Campaign at the invitation of Palestinian communities.

The olive tree is a national symbol for Palestinians. As thousands of olive trees have been bulldozed, uprooted and burned by Israeli settlers and the military – (over half a million olive and fruit trees have been destroyed since September 2000)harvesting has become more than a source of livelihood; it has become a form of resistance.

The olive harvest is an annual affirmation of Palestinians’ historical, spiritual and economic connection to their land, and a rejection of Israeli efforts to seize it. Despite efforts by Israeli settlers and soldiers to prevent them from accessing their land, Palestinian communities remain steadfast in refusing to give up their olive harvest.

International and Israeli volunteers join Palestinians each year to harvest olives, and this makes a big difference. It has proven in the past to help limit and decrease the number and severity of attacks and harassment. The presence of activists can reduce the risk of extreme violence from Israeli settlers and the Israeli army and supports Palestinians’ assertion of their right to earn their livelihood. International solidarity activists engage in non-violent intervention and documentation and this practical support enables many families to pick their olives. In addition The Olive Harvest Campaign also provides a wonderful opportunity to spend time with Palestinian families in their olive groves and homes.

The campaign will begin on the 8th or 9th of October and run for approximately 6-8 weeks, depending on the size of the harvest.”

“Come! Bear witness to the suffering, courage and generosity of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation.”

You don’t understand it because you assume everyone shares your humanity.  These people are, as you once described them, a Jewish Taliban, though there is nothing Jewish about their ideology.

Perhaps you were being scarcastc WriterOnTheStorm, but Arafat’s famous words at his UN speech went like this:

Something like:

“Today I have come bearing an olive branch and a freedom fighter’s gun. DO NOT LET THE OLIVE BRANCH FALL FROM MY HAND.”

Unless of course, you were deliberately lying.

The US, Israel and Palestine
Dishonest Broker

By AVI SHLAIM

“The Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been both a
major concern of American diplomacy since 1967 and
the arena of persistent failure.

There are many reasons for America’s failure to
broker a peace deal between Israel and the
Palestinians but the most fundamental one is that it
is a dishonest broker. As a result of its palpable
partiality towards Israel, America has lost all
credibility in the eyes not only of the Palestinians
but of the wider Arab and Muslim worlds.

The so-called peace process has been all process
and no peace.
Peace talks that go nowhere
slowly provide Israel with just the cover it needs to
pursue its expansionist agenda on the West Bank.

The asymmetry of power between Israel and the
Palestinians is so great that only a third party can
bridge the gap. In plain language, this means leaning
on Israel to end the occupation and to permit the
emergence of an independent Palestinian state on the
West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

In theory America is committed to a two-state
solution to the conflict but in practise it has done
very little to push Israel into such a settlement. It
is not that America lacks the means to bring pressure
to bear on Israel. On the contrary, Israel is
crucially, and almost exclusively, dependent on
America for military, diplomatic, and financial
support.

America’s financial support amounts to three billion
dollars a year. So the leverage is there. The real
problem is that American leaders are either unable or
unwilling to exercise this leverage in order to
promote a just settlement of this tragic conflict.”

....... when they could so easily have peace.

The only way they might have peace is to create a democratic pluralistic state in Palestine, and I don’t believe 1 in a 100, or 1 in a 1000 Jews is in favor of that idea.  Make it 1 in 10000.

Every Israeli government has expanded the settlements, there is no division of opinion is Israel.  It’s a charade for the goyim.

It’s like the difference between Kahane and Chomsky, it’s window dressing only.  The reality is every Jew supports a Jewish Israel.

why? Why? WHY???  How can these settlers be such evil fools?

Every day they force the situation closer and closer to a brutal, violent confrontation, when they could so easily have peace.

Yet I think the right wing supporters of Netanyahu want this to happen.  They are fanatics as crazy and dangerous as the fanatics of any religion.

And they are going to get all us who are their fellow Jews killed. For what? So they can steal an old man’s olive tree orchard?

I cannot understand this.  And I am shamed by it.

Truthdig Editors:
According to the report from the Guardian, Oxfam “is trying to do something” about this very nasty, mean, discouraging, soul-killing destruction by “settlers.”
Please research more about what Oxfam is doing, and give readers some indication of whether they have had any success and what more can be done to help Osfam’s efforts.  People need to know what they can do and need to be encouraged to do it, in my opinion.  Thanks.

Few points:

1. Uprooting and cutting down olive trees is not a new phenomenon. It’s been a systematic practice by the Zionist army and the settlers alike, and only an Omniscient God knows how many thousands of these trees have been destroyed since the Israeli occupation of Palestine. It’s only that it goes unreported in the American MSM, because Americans, who are part of the problem, will never appreciate and learn the value of an olive tree for the natives of Palestine.

2. Olive trees are not only a source of livelihood for thousands of Palestinian families, but they are a symbol of peace, fertility and affinity between the land and their owners. An olive tree needs a ten years of cultivation and care before it starts yielding its fruits. So with the destruction of every olive tree, another possibility for peace, coexistence, and reconciliation between the evil occupiers and the occupied victims is destroyed.

3. Most of those evil and terrorist settlers are Jews from the US, enabled and aided in their evil and criminality by the American political-military establishment and with our taxpayers money. So remember America, with every act of criminality against the natives you become automatically the enemy and you should not be surprised if you become the target for revenge, when the weak and oppressed get their opportunity for revenge!

4. Though I know five languages, I have failed to find appropriate words to describe the criminality of those evil Zionists. However, suffice to say they are the scum of the earth; hejos de putas; and ?????????????

The olive branch is also a symbol of peace which the Zionists want no part of. Helen was right. The Jews should leave Palestine.

Thugs. Nothing but thugs would do this. And to think of all the tragedy surrounding the Jewish people - you would think they should know better.
