Israel Strikes at Aid Flotilla, Killing 9 (Update: Security Council)

Email this item Email    Print this item Print    Share this item... Share

Posted on May 30, 2010

Update: An earlier report of 16 casualties was based on radio reports shortly after the incident. Media outlets, including Haaretz, are reporting the military’s tally of nine activists killed.

Update 2: The U.N. Security Council held an emergency meeting called by Turkey to discuss the raid. More from: CNN, Haaretz

Earlier:

Activists trying to bring humanitarian aid to the blockaded Gaza Strip ran afoul of the Israeli military on Sunday. Shots were fired after masked Israeli gunmen descended from helicopters hovering over the flotilla as it made its way through international waters.

An Israeli radio station reported that 14 to 16 civilians were dead. (Latest reports say nine were killed).

Al Jazeera, which had a reporter on the lead ship, showed activists using sticks to fight commandos.

Life on the “freedom flotilla” earlier today:

The Telegraph:

The activists were not carrying guns, but television footage shown by al-Jazeera and Turkish television channels show hand-to-hand fighting, with activists wearing life-jackets striking commandoes with sticks.

The Israeli army said its troops were assaulted with axes and knives.

The television footage did not show firing but shots could be heard in the background. One man was shown lying unconscious on the deck, while another man was helped away.

A woman wearing hijab, the Muslim headscarf, was seen carrying a stretcher covered in blood.

Even suspected pirate’s rights are respected when in international waters. But Israel seems to think that it’s
perfectly justified to ‘attack’ ships 200 miles offshore. Under the circumstances passengers were perfectly entitled to protect themselves with whatever they had to hand.

Unless the US condemns this unlawful act in the strongest terms it will be seen as an accomplice.

I see that crack Israeli commandos have been busy overnight, putting their lives on the line defending Israel against little old ladies with rakes.

Neil C. Reinhardt, it is exactly those with your mindset who would do something like this chickenshit attack against civilians and think it morally sound.

On this Memorial Day, let’s forget this unfortunate accident, akin to the attack upon the (forgotten) “USS Liberty”, and prepare to send our staunch ally Israel more weapons & moral support, as Bobby Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Reagan, Carter, both Bushes, and Obama would recommend.

Here we go again; for the zillion time in their short fucken bloody history of 60 years, those savage Zionists are at it again, displaying the ultimate cowardliness by facing unarmed peace activists with their weapons of mass destruction!

But I am not as outraged at those murderers as I am at their enablers, the fucken US political-military establishment, who could not summon one ounce of moral courage to say more than “we regret the violence!”

Picking up on Tobysgirl’s comment, one thing that rarely gets discussed is the sheer incompetence of the Israeli Defence Forces. Given the amount of piracy and drug-running on the high seas these days, the armed forces of many nations have frequently had to storm hijacked ships, etc. Yes, there are casualties in these operations, but never such a one-sided bloodbath as this.

Of course it’s of a piece with Mossad’s botched operation in Dubai, and the insults toward the US vice-president and the Turkish ambassador to Israel meted out by members of Netanyahu’s feeble and dysfunctional government.

Neil C. Reinhardt

You seem to be a very noble person, doing all of those things you claim. Does that make your opinion any more important than any one else’s? Does it give you the right to insult people by calling them “Losers”, “child”, and “retard”? Perhaps if you took the time and formulated a thoughtful and intelligent argument without resorting to childlike name calling, and fallacious ad hominem attacks, you would be taken more seriously.

I could use a pimple on my butt to out think most of you and do so while sound asleep.?

Really? You certainly haven’t shown any proof of that, here.

I saw the Israeli military woman on TV this morning, and had to quickly turn it off. There is nothing like listening to someone who represents commandos with gunships and undoubtedly assault weaponry saying “her people” were attacked with knives. This is Israeli’s modus operandi, attacking unarmed people (I’m sorry, I don’t consider knives weaponry in this situation) and then getting aggressive about supposedly being under assault. Is this why attacking Lebanon didn’t go so well for them? Maybe they can invade Grenada next.

Hopefully this wakes up a few more people.  Israel, and its U.S. supporters, feel no obligation to follow international law or respect life.  It’s all about solidifying Israel’s existence and extending its territory no matter what the cost to anyone else.  Excessive force is the normal mode of operation.
How are peace activists going to deal with this reality?  So far, the U.S. has used Israel’s brutality to further its own ambitions, perhaps as a kind of good cop, bad cop strategy.  Obviously, Israel would not do what it does without the support of the U.S. government.  So we need change here at home first.  Perhaps the bad publicity today will help, but we need many more acts of resistance!

It the comment about video showing “activists using sticks to fight commandos.” supposed to be IN the corresponding video? I sure don’t see it. Maybe it was just meant “at another time” or something?

Also, it is just about impossible to believe, EVEN if you think some activists intended to smuggle weapons, that anyone would try it in the first convoy. They knew fair well there was about an 90% chance of being boarded. If they really inteded such a thing it certainly would be with a later convoy.

And when Israel begins its assault on Iran, Americans will stand up and cheer. “Nuke the fuckers” will be chanted across this great land of ours. Liberals will cheer because Israel is a “shining star” of democracy in the Middle East and Iran is a hostile dictatorship that is a threat to peace in the Middle East. How can any country that aspires to posses a nuclear weapon possibly have peaceful intentions? Conservatives will cheer because they will see it as a part of the War on Terror, and we need to hunt down and kill terrorists. The extreme Christian fundamentalists will begin preparations for the Second Coming.

The MSM has already begun to “prepare” the general population to support such an act. And the fact is, Americans have already accepted the idea of preemptive war. For it was preemptive war which caused a fundamental shift in the balance of power on the ME in the first place.

Israel will gain bipartisan support, like the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the US will actively help to finance and arm the Israelis, and eventually be drawn in to the war. Gas prices will shoot up to 4,5 possibly 6 dollars/gallon and recession will hit the US even harder than the housing bubble. Maybe then, people will realize, that Libertarians, real Libertarians, are the only true non-interventionist party in this country, no matter how much Ben Stein rants and raves that Ron Paul is Anti-Semitic.

Mr Reinhardt - The Gazans did stop almost completely in 2008, following a cease-fire agreement with Israel. The Israelis broke the ceasefire on November 4 2008 (when the world was looking the other way at the US general election). This provoked an increase in rocket fire (as it was probably intended to do), and the IDF launched its long-planned murderous assault on Gaza that December.

It is clear what the response to this outrage should be: Attack the rogue state of Israel to get rid of its WMDs.

To the post by Mr. Neil C. Reinhardt, I say: “We are not talking about Gaza in this instance. We are talking about peace activists taking humanitarian aid to the illegally besieged people of Gaza. Get the difference, moron?”
