Israel OKs Major Housing Development With More to Come

Israel’s Interior Ministry has approved a 1,600-unit housing complex in East Jerusalem. It’s the same complex that was announced last year, embarrassing a visiting Vice President Joe Biden, and it comes with the promise to build an additional 2,700 units of housing in the occupied Palestinian area of the city.

Israelis have been protesting high rents, erecting a tent city in Tel Aviv to drive home the point, but building on Palestinian land remains controversial. Thursday’s housing announcement, as The New York Times points out, could drive Palestinian leaders even harder to declare statehood at the United Nations in a month.  —PZS

The New York Times:

The announcement also provoked an angry reaction from Israeli groups opposed to housing construction in land conquered by Israel in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. They denounced it as an opportunistic way for the Israeli government to exploit a housing shortage that has led to unaffordable rents and mass protests in Israel. Peace Now, the leading anti-settlement group in Israel, condemned what it called the Interior Ministry’s “cynical use” of the housing crisis.

The Israel Interior Ministry announcement came a month before the United Nations annual General Assembly in New York, where Palestinian Authority officials have said they may unilaterally declare statehood, a move that is opposed by both Israel and the United States, its strongest ally. They favor a resumption of peace talks, which remain stalled partly because of Palestinian objections to Israeli construction on disputed lands. The housing announcement could strengthen Palestinian resolve to proceed with the statehood declaration.

Mainstream Press Misses the King of the Hill

The Israel Lobby’s Return to Congress

By ALISON WEIR

August 11, 2011

“You might think that twenty percent of the American Congress going on all-expense-paid, week-long junkets to a foreign country – paid for by a lobby for that country – would be considered newsworthy. Especially when the top Congressional leaders of both parties are leading the trips.

You would be wrong.

81 Congressional representatives from all over the country, led by Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, are traveling to Israel this month. Most are freshmen Congressmen and include half of all the freshmen Republicans voted into office in 2010.

The week-long trips are being paid for by the American Israel Education Foundation (AIEF), which was created in 1990 as a supporting organization of AIPAC, America’s major pro-Israel lobbying organization, and is located in the same building (AIEF, which is only one of numerous organizations pushing pro-Israel policies, has an annual budget of over $24 million with an even larger endowment.

This is an extraordinary situation. No other lobby on behalf of a foreign country comes anywhere near to controlling such wealth or taking so many of America’s elected representatives on a propaganda trip to their favorite country.

Not all those going on these trips are enthusiastic. The wife of one Congressman who made a similar trip some years ago said that she and her husband had never been exposed to such pressure in all their lives. She said that at one point on their trip, her husband – a normally extremely tough man – was curled up in a fetal position.

A staff member of one representative participating in this month’s junkets said the representative had no choice. If the Congressional rep didn’t go on the trip, the rep would be targeted by AIPAC, large quantities of money, including massive out-of-state money, would be raised for the opponent in the next election, and quite likely the representative would be defeated. The staffer said that the Israel Lobby is far too powerful to ignore and that American voters have no knowledge of what’s going on.”

~~~~~~~~~~
PH...our spineless “AIPAC controlled” congresspeople put Israel first instead of the USA…each time!
Howard, you have to be kidding.  The issies are the ones who will not recognize the opposition or negotiate.
Robert, I already contacted http://www.congress.org and told Steny Hoyer to stay there with his friends, settle in the occupied territories and throw a couple rocks at the Palestinians, it might make them feel better about themselves, just like real Israelis.
My congressman is not there. darn.  I will get on him
to go.
Great country to visit.
3 cheers for Israel.  Its a Jewish neighborhood and no
reason not to build there.
if only those countries who have been attacking Israel
since 1948 would make peace with them, what improvement
in their lives would begin to happen !
“Is Israel not surrounded on every border by extremist terrorists lusting for their demise?”
~~~~~~~~~

Hey Eric...

Israel with its massive “Undeclared” nuclear & chemical weapons stockpiles (WMD) & with its massive American made weapons arsenals have been & are on a mission to continue with their zionist’s goals/agenda. Steal more land, build more “for Jews only” settlements/roads and ethnic cleansing/brutal occupation of the Palestinian people.

Israel, an extreme terrorist/racist state, has killed/murdered more innocent unarmed civilians when compared with your so called “extremist terrorists”.

Israel has slaughtered hundreds/thousands of women and children/civilians with their use of 500 pounds+ bombs, cluster bombs, white phosphorus, missiles…etc… on homes, villages, towns, cities, refugee camps, schools, farms, hospitals, UN centers…

Howard.

“IT is Israeli land. Not taken from anybody unless it
was from a country or countries that started wars
against Israel”

Try and tell that to the 391,000 Palestinians expelled between 1 December 1947 and the beginning of the 1948 War as documented by the Israeli Defence Forces Intelligence Service.

In a June 2009 speech, under pressure from the Obama administration, Netanyahu declared his acceptance of a two-state solution. It was a patently insincere speech, for he uttered not the slightest reproach when senior members of his own Likud Party and ministers in his government announced the formation of a thirty-nine-member Land of Israel Caucus, the largest caucus in the Knesset. The co-chair of the caucus is Ze’ev Elkin, head of the party’s parliamentary delegation. It includes the Likud’s Reuven Rivlin, Knesset speaker; Benny Begin, a member of the so-called Septet, Netanyahu’s seven-member inner security cabinet, which passes on all major government decisions; as well as several other ministers and deputy ministers in Netanyahu’s cabinet. Haaretz reported at the time that the only two Likud ministers in his government who did not support the caucus were Dan Meridor and Netanyahu himself. Only one minister, Michael Eitan, objected to it, calling the caucus a “thunderous contradiction” of Netanyahu’s declared commitment to a two-state accord.

The official goal of the caucus is to strengthen “Israel’s grasp on the entire Land of Israel.” If that’s not clear enough, Begin helpfully elaborated: “The establishment of a foreign independent sovereign state headed by the PLO in parts of the Land of Israel stands in opposition to two basic ideas that are both supported by a majority of the Knesset: the absolute historic right of the Nation of Israel to the Land of Israel and the right of the State of Israel to national security.”

Building on Palestinian land is beyond “controversial”. It is illegal and calculatedly provocative It will provoke missiles to be fired at Israel, and the Israelis will use these missiles as the excuse for more brutal incursions into Palestinian land. Then, since the land is cleared….
