Iran Backs Away From Stoning Case

A woman portrays a victim of death by stoning at a protest in Brussels in 2005.

International support rallied around an Iranian woman, Sakineh Mohammadi Astiani, as she inched closer to death by stoning for her dubious conviction under anti-adultery laws. Now the Iranian government has announced Astiani will not be stoned, though they were unclear if her death sentence had been lifted.

While this case holds a glimmer of hope for the regime’s treatment of women, 12 women and three men still face death by stoning in the country. —JCL

The BBC:

The authorities in Iran have announced that a woman convicted of adultery will not be stoned to death.

But it is not clear whether they have lifted the death sentence against Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, who has been in prison in Tabriz since 2006.

The 43-year-old had already been punished with flogging for an “illicit relationship” outside marriage when another court tried her for adultery.

There has been an international campaign to prevent her being stoned.

Well, Tropicgirl, answering my questions and challenges with your questions and challenges pretty much answers my curiosity… you obviously have no FACTS to share to support your allegations.

The “crimes of England” can’t hold a candle to the crimes of the USA. I can offer a list of nearly 30 WARS the US has either started or supported in the decades since WWII. No other country ON EARTH is as dangerous and aggressive as the USA. You have some nerve pointing fingers at other nations. England may not be lilly white but it’s a long, long way from the criminal the USA has become.

The only “truckload” you have to offer would be most suitable spread on a field before planting.

FACTS, Tropicgirl… just the FACTS. If you offer only more glib opinions and unsupported assumptions, I will not respond.

RAE—

You’ve got to be kidding, right? What are you trying to do…

Separate the Queen from the crimes of England? (utterly impossible).

Separate the people of England from the crimes of England? (more feasible),

or Exonerate the History of England? (don’t make me laugh).

So which is it so I can respond? I’ve got a truckload and I would be more than
happy to continue a discussion about the “Queeeen”. I don’t think she has had
nearly enough scrutiny recently.

Leefeller, I understand what you mean when you talk about anti-Jewish bigotry. Some of the comments I have read at truthdig are shocking and vicious, and have nothing to do with the crimes of Israel.

However, I wish I could agree that “it is not the people of countries which make policy, it is those self serving self righteous in power.” Once upon a time I believed this about my own country and then I got older and more exhausted by people’s deliberate ignorance.

There are wonderful peace activists in Israel, but there are millions of idiots who only see the murder of Palestinians, Iranians, etc, as a good thing. There are wonderful activists here in the U.S., and there are tens of millions of idiots who can only say “Jawohl” to war, police brutality, deregulation of corporations, and the privatization of all our public resources, including schools. Yes, yes, I can hear the liberals talking about the corporate control of the MSM. This does not explain people who have no interest in the world around them, no interest in other countries’ health care systems, no interest in what other Americans experience on a daily basis, no interest in government policy except when they want a handout (and those who whine the loudest about taxes are always first in line for any handout).

Unfortunately, I have come to believe we have the government we deserve, filled with people as greedy and self-serving as many Americans would like to be if they had the chance. I wish I could believe in the evil powermongers and the duped public, but after decades of exposure to the moronic public I think it has a whole lot to do with the shape our country’s in.

This would be business as usual for
most any county. Iran seems to use religion
instead of corporations to manipulate their laws.

As for war monger Israel, I would suggest the
government is the problem not the people of
Israel, this would be the same here in the USA,
plus why not Iran, as always those usually
calling the shots never go to the front lines
when war is propagated.

The people of Iran are just like anyone else, I
believe they would prefer to live in peace, maybe
they would also like to have equal rights for
women?

Manipulations by Israel are to be expected, for
propaganda works that way! I have little respect
for the Israel government as our own government,
the USA military budget is insane.

re:By Leefeller, July 11 at 8:00 pm:

There are two very good reasons that a story like this elicits the response that
you find so upsetting:

(1) We are not aiding and abetting the Iranian government’s crimes; we are
aiding and abetting the Israeli government’s crimes, and they are bigger crimes.
That’s the huge difference.

(2) Also: Israel is dying to get the US to go to war against Iran and in fact
destroy that country. Anything that seems useful as propaganda in the effort to
whip up American support for this agenda must be viewed with a great deal of
caution and skepticism.

Comparing Iran and Israel, it is quite clear that Israel is far more dangerous to
the United States and to the peace of the world; that Israel is a far greater threat
to Iran than Iran is to Israel; that the government of Israel is by far the more
ideologically fanatical, racist, militaristic, and fascistic; and that in fact the
people of Iran, not of Israel, are in danger of suffering a nuclear holocaust in
the near future. These things must not be forgotten for one moment.

The pro-Israel zealots love to point to atrocities like this and kvetch, “Why the
double standard? Why does the left only scream when Israel kills women
and children?”

But if the US were giving massive funding and military assistance to Iran, and
praising Iran to the skies as a model of virtue, and threatening to bomb or
invade or occupy any country that Iran doesn’t like, and if Iran had hundreds of
nuclear weapons and the US were absurdly pretending that the weapons didn’t
exist, while blocking all UN resolutions against Iran for human rights violations,
and aiding and abetting violent illegal Iranian occupations and territorial grabs
from neighboring countries, then “the left” would of course be “screaming”
plenty about that.

It’s not a double standard. The US supports Israel lavishly and abjectly. It
doesn’t support Iran at all. Our tax dollars and our military are not being used
to prop Iran up and assist it in its crimes. That’s the difference. And that’s why
“the left” screams a lot more about Israel’s crimes than about Iran’s crimes.

Women- Israeli Mother Addresses European Parliament

05.14.2010 | Counter Currents

“It is true, unfortunately, that the local violence inflicted on Palestinian women by the government of Israel and the Israeli army, has expanded around the globe, In fact, state violence and army violence, individual and collective violence, are the lot of Muslim women today, not only in Palestine but wherever the enlightened western world is setting its big imperialistic foot. It is violence which is hardly ever addressed and which is halfheartedly condoned by most people in Europe and in the USA .

This is because the so-called free world is afraid of the Muslim womb.

Great France of “la liberte égalite et la fraternite” is scared of little girls with head scarves. Great Jewish Israel is afraid of the Muslim womb which its ministers call a demographic threat.”

The last I checked, rabbinic law has as a punishment for adultery the burning-
alive of the woman; this is the more stringent law and stoning being the less-
severe punishment.  The woman is considered the property of the man in a
marriage.  This is practiced in orthodox communities in Israel.  So why all the
focus on Iran?  The double-standards in this society disgust me.

Let the presumptuous, hubristic western man dictate to the savages of the
earth how they are to conduct themselves and their governments right?  I can’t
believe such hypocrites such as yourselves are the prime readers of this

Thanks for your explanation, Tropicgirl.

I’d need some hard, irrefutable FACTS before I could follow you down the road of accusing QE II of the crimes as you suggest. I agree that SOME of her ancestors were little more than some combination of nut-case and mafia boss but that was then and this is now. I think it completely unfair to visit the crimes of the “father” on the “son.”

I’ve been around since Queen Elizabeth, now 84, was a princess. You state:

“With her history of carnage already in the middle east, and HER role in ruining countries around the world, for the likes of HER BP, and HER other murderous corporations (simply change names) grabbing resources and killing natives
around the world for a very long time.”

These are, so far, nothing more than your unsupported assumptions and glib opinion. Exactly what has been her PERSONAL role in “ruining countries around the world”? Please name these “murderous corporations”... which “resources” have been “grabbed”... and what “natives” has she killed?

Now I will admit that her personal holdings and influence are likely far greater than have ever been published. I’m sure she inherited a lorry-load of “baggage” when she became Queen in 1952… stuff she had NOTHING TO DO WITH ORIGINATING and likely “stuff” she is powerless to change.

Queen Elizabeth’s international influence comes primarily BECAUSE she is powerless to actually order anyone to do anything (except for her personal staff and employees, of course). She is an advisor. She sees Prime Ministers and Presidents come and go. She’s the glue. She is a figurehead - the PR person, if you like, for dozens of countries.

BUT…she takes her marching orders from the British Government of the Day and, as Head of the Commonwealth of Nations, from that body’s movers and shakers. She either “follows orders” or she will very quickly be removed from the job, one way or another.

Now, if you have some behind the scenes info to share THAT IS DOCUMENTABLE and not just conspiratory hearsay or wishful thinking, please share it.

But for all I (we) know it has been her influence as the most experienced “politician” in the world, who knows every leader on the planet and has their number on her speeddial, THAT HAS KEPT THIS WORLD FROM ENTERING WWIII. Prove me wrong.

Now that somebody has raised the issue, let’s look for a minute at why
adultery “has a leg in religion.”

God is “Our Father”? Right?  Fathers are men, right?  God (Allah) is a Superior
Being, right?  Ergo, men are superior because God is a man. (Reminder: It
wasn’t always this way, but it is now, in most “civilized” places.)

Because men are superior, that makes women inferior?  Yep.
If men are superior, they have a right to rule women?  Yep.
(In addition to all that, Eve (the first woman) “caused” Adam to eat the
forbidden fruit, right?  Yep.
That means not only that women are inferior, but they are also evil, right?  Yep.
(And they menstruate, so they’re dirty on top of all the rest of it. Yep.)

Therefore ........................(centuries of lies enforced by men pushing women
around and punching them out) .......... what can you expect ?

You can expect exactly what we have—a world stlll largely influenced by
authoritarian religious notions enforced by hierarchies of priests, preachers,
mullahs, imams, kings, emperors, fathers, husbands,  brothers, prison guards,
police, admirals, chiefs, generals,  supervisors, bosses, principals, judges, ceos
and legislators—mostly male.
Oh, yes—and wars.  Almost forgot that.

And behind all that?  Women are beautiful to look at, and more powerful than
men, by nature.  Men can’t bear children.  Imagine how early man felt when
they watched for nine months while early woman literally produced a new
human being inside her stomach and pushed it out into this world to breathe,
eat, live, and grow to be another completely separate human.  Magic!
Wondrous! Divine!
Men don’t have that much power; they could never do that. Therefore we
should worship women.

Oh, but if we did that, would men fight each other for food, clothing and
shelter?  Maybe not.  Can’t take chances.  Therefore, we will pretend that men
are better than women even though we know they are not.

Ergo:  Our Father who art in Heaven,... (subtext)  Hail Mary, mother of God)...

But, but, but ..., we have now reached the point where men don’t have to fight
each other for food, clothing and shelter anymore.

So ............................let’s move along here.  It’s getting late.

Queen Elizabeth with “Lucretia McEvil.” Please enlighten me.”“”

Sorry, I was away for a while…

Anyway, Obama is killing Afghanistanis, Iraqis, and even bombing targets in
Iran and Pakistan. Many, no MOST of these victims OF OBAMA’S have been
women. They have also murdered the support system of the women, such as
their husbands, fathers, brothers and children. Many times at weddings and
family gatherings.

This sympathy for this poor Iranian woman is simply a ploy to use Obama’s
bankrupt woman’s movement donation factory’s talking points for his own
political agenda.

There is no doubt in my mind, from the day that I heard Rep. Ron Klein, FL,
several years ago, announce to a crowd in Palm Beach that he had no problem
nuking Iran in a pre-emptive strike. They all still feel the same, including
Lieberscrew. Nothing has changed. We have no real intention to help this
woman. Who do you think gets sick when sanctions are imposed? Certainly not
the rich men. Its the women and children first.

So, to put it simply, the deaths are coming from us, not their stoners. I think
most people in this blog understand that this is SIMPLY THE LATEST CAMPAIGN
TO INVADE IRAN.

And, Lucretia McEvil is a reference to a song by Blood Sweat and Tears about
Lucrecia Borgia, a woman of (self-proclaimed) “royalty”, around Renaissance
times, in Europe who was part of a group of merchant families that literally
made and murdered kings, placed popes, killed popes, committing incest,
poisonings and generally ran amuk at that time as the most powerful people of
the day, somewhat replacing the then-marginalized royalty that came before.
Evil, inbred, murdering, power-people.

Queen Elizabeth comes from this type of background, in my opinion. With her
history of carnage already in the middle east, and HER role in ruining countries
around the world, for the likes of HER BP, and HER other murderous
corporations (simply change names) grabbing resources and killing natives
around the world for a very long time. What Obama is doing is simply a
continuation of this alliance, now called the New World Order.

You could say that I feel that the “queen” is a re-incarnation, of sorts.

Its a good song, you should listen to it. And a good band.

Thank you, felicity. I’m always amazed at the self-righteousness of people living in a country where women are routinely raped, assaulted, murdered, and even tortured. Instead of being seen as the consequences of living in a violent, militarized, patriarchal society, these events are viewed as personal tragedies in the same way cancer or shellshock are. They seemingly have nothing to do with the choices we have made (or not made) about what kind of world we want to live in.

We can see in the Iranian situation that this is not simply a personal tragedy, but a societal attitude that is, of course, vicious. Our attitudes toward women and children are little better.

Maybe we can sell Iran some of our electric chairs or gassing machines or lethal-injection paraphenalia, or nooses.  Of maybe we can arrange a lucrative contract between our prison cartels and the Iranian government.  Afterall, the objection to what was to befall the poor woman was not her death-penalty verdict but the method used to carry it out.

Isn’t it a tad hypocritical for a country which sanctions the death penalty to fault another country for sanctioning it?

Even though adultery is not a capital crime in America today, should the Tea Party types take over the government, it just may become one.  I remember when Connecticut passed a law outlawing the selling and/or use of contraceptives all in the name of combatting adultery. (And what is outlawing abortion but a way of combatting adultery.)

Stoning only a womens head but not her torso seems so sexists! Guess the idea is to have a smaller target?

Those are quite large rocks in the photo above, maybe the Iranians can change from rocks to using bowling balls to make it more entertaining and at the same time moving from the stone age to the bowling age.

90 lashes seems like a lot, guess they have professional lasher’s in Iran, one would have to have Arnold man like arms to keep lashing that long. How do they keep count, hope while counting to 90 they do not have to take a potty break and forget what number they were on.

Human nature, you have got to love it!

In spite of being around for thousands of years, the inmates of some societies obviously haven’t strayed too far from the cave entrance.

There is tradition, religion and culture… and then there is just savage stupidity. It’s a disgusting experience to encounter a situation where they’re one and the same.

What puzzles me is why I haven’t heard a peep out of the women of the world. Why doesn’t a leader such as Angela Merkel of Germany or Julia Gillard of Australia just stand up and declare a complete boycott of goods/services to or from Iran until this type of crime against humanity is erased from their society?

There are a dozen or more heads of state that are women, including Queen Elizabeth II… NOT A PEEP… or at least not an EFFECTIVE peep.

This was a fantastic situation for Iran. Whoever is doing their current PR is doing a
very smart job, in my opinion.

Over the last several days the internet has BLASTED THE DEFENDERS of this poor
(used) woman. REASON BEING IS THAT EVERYONE WHO IS SUPPOSEDLY
DEFENDING THIS POOR WOMAN WOULD BOMB, TRASH, EXPLODE, HARM, KILL,
SICKEN AND MAIM IRANIANS AT THE FIRST CHANCE. Including her father, her
mother, her children, her siblings and HER! We’re bombing them NOW!

So, BRILLIANT, Iran. Sometimes the truth comes out by way of unintended
consequences, fully intended, by smart people.

Nothing to see here, folks, move along.

Actually, I’m amazed Crapdig even published this.
