A CCTV surveillance camera takes in the scene in Nottingham, England.

Street surveillance is taking an alarming turn for the interactive in England.  As part of a government plan to target “antisocial” behavior and petty crime, closed-circuit television cameras will be installed around the country with the capacity to talk back to people engaging in unseemly acts in public places.

Breitbart.com:

The scheme lets local council workers in a control centre monitor pictures from the cameras and talk to them if they feel they are doing something wrong.

The cameras were piloted in Middlesbrough, north-east England, where they have been used to reprimand vandals and litter bugs, but now loudspeakers are being fitted to cameras in another 20 areas.

Britain has some 4.2 million CCTV cameras and the government’s privacy watchdog, Information Commissioner Richard Thomas, warned last year that the nation risks “sleep-walking into a surveillance society”.

Having lived in the UK for 20 years I’m surprised at the negative comments—anti-social behaviour here has got pretty bad in the last 10 years.

The other commenters and, perhaps, the original poster seem to be saying “it’s socially acceptable to litter, harass people on the streets, spray graffiti, and vandalise public property”.

To be quite honest, I’m sick and tired of that behaviour and am happy they’re doing something about it here.

I just saw a map (sorry no link) showing that Orwell’s house is basically surrounded by surveillance cameras. Nice!

Thanks to the fake terrorist attack called 9/11 perpetrated by bush, cheney, etc, this country is not far behind England if not already ahead.

The “Patriot” Act was not reactive to 9/11, it was proactive. It was on bush’s desk on Sept 10.
Then we got domestic NSA spying, the REAL ID Act, RFID tracking chips in our passports and licences, the Military Commissions and John Warner Acts. Next is martial law and the total destruction of the Constitution. And us.

All to make us “safe” of course.

And the sheeple in this country still swallow the official 9/11 story: hook, line and sinker.

Wake up. Educate yourselves. Read. Research 9/11.

Britain is just being used as a proxy for the U.S. If “King George” and “Darth Vader” are continued to be allowed to interpret and ignore the U.S. Constitution at their will, it won’t be much longer before those same cameras are ubiquitous in the urban areas of America. Coming soon to theatres near you, “Police State: American Style”.
