Disregard for human rights runs rampant in the International Monetary Fund; computers are being designed with human DNA; and Playboy reveals the ins and outs of Americans’ sex lives. These discoveries and more, below.

On a regular basis, Truthdig brings you the news items and odds and ends that found their way to Larry Gross, director of the USC Annenberg School for Communication. A specialist in media and culture, art and communication, visual communication and media portrayals of minorities, Gross helped found the field of gay and lesbian studies.

The links below open in a new window. Newer ones are on top.

We’re quickly learning, in the aftermath of the arrest of its ex-leader, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, that the culture inside the IMF is almost as toxic as the bitter economic poison doled out by the organization itself.

The Excuses Discredited Doomsday Prophets Make
There’s a line in the book of Matthew that doomsday prophets like Harold Camping—the 89-year-old who promised the world would end Saturday—always seem to ignore: It says that nobody knows the actual day or the hour, not even Jesus or the angels.

Playboy Surveys Sex Lives of Americans
Back in 1983, Playboy conducted the biggest sex poll in history, which surveyed 65,396 male and 14,928 female readers. Now, almost three decades later, Playboy has done it again.

New and Improved Comments

We are launching a major overhaul of our comments section.

In addition to more robust spam filtering and moderation, new features include the ability to rate other comments, sort how they are displayed and respond directly via e-mail or in a thread.

Unfortunately, commenters will lose their existing Truthdig identities. It's a pain, we know, but on the plus side you will now be able to log in with a plethora of options, including Google, Twitter, Facebook and Disqus accounts.

Before launching this system we spent months in discussion with our top commenters. We listened to the feedback and we hope you like what we've come up with.

Please direct any problems or concerns to us via our contact page.

Usury in every form has been used and is being
used in the United States, and has brought the
United States down, because usury doesn’t work
for the whole.  Usury in all forms MUST be
discontinued immediately if our nation or any nation
is to survive for the long term.  How do I know—
the Bible tells me so in the Old Testament of which
not one jot or tittle has changed.
