Hamas Rockets Strike the Heart of Israel, but Death Toll Illustrates Israel’s Military Advantage

Posted on Jul 8, 2014

Palestinians try to salvage what they can of their belongings from the rubble of a house destroyed by an overnight Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on Tuesday. Israel launched what could be a long-term offensive against the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, the military said, striking at least 50 sites in Gaza by air and sea and mobilizing troops for a possible ground invasion in order to quell rocket attacks on Israel. Israel continued its attacks on the Gaza Strip on Tuesday as militant Palestinian rockets landed in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Of the 23 people killed, all were Palestinian.

That figure was reported by Palestinian authorities via Reuters.

Israeli authorities reported two injuries following rocket attacks that struck unusually deep into Israeli territory. Comments by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu suggested the conflict could go on for some time.

This conflagration was sparked by the slayings of three Israeli and one Palestinian teenagers. It should be noted that at least five children, whose names we don’t know, have died since the crisis escalated to military action.

The victims on both sides, whether Palestinian or Israeli, are primarily civilians.
