Ferguson, Mo., police officers were widely criticized for their overly militarized response to public protests, but on Gov. Jay Nixon’s orders, the actual military is coming to town.

Nixon is sending the Missouri National Guard to Ferguson, but the troops will fall under the command of the state Highway Patrol, which took over from local police Thursday.

President Obama said he urged the governor to limit the use of troops.

Protesters continue to clash with police after the shooting death of Michael Brown on Aug. 9. Brown, an African-American teenager, was unarmed and shot by a white police officer. The FBI and Justice Department are investigating his death.
