Rep. Gabrielle Giffords continues to amaze her doctors with her recovery from the brain injury she sustained in Saturday’s shooting. On Thursday, the word “miracle” was once again invoked as her medical team reported her progress, announcing that she had opened her eyes and was communicating through gestures.  —KA

Update: CNN reported some moving details from two of Giffords’ close friends in Congress.

Los Angeles Times via Google News:

Lemole said he was there when Giffords first opened her eyes Wednesday evening in the presence of family members and some of her colleagues from Congress. “It was probably a combination of the unexpected but familiar that prompted her to open her eyes and caused her to look around. That implies that the part of the brain that lets us awake from sleeping, the arousal center,” is functioning.

[...] Lemole said it is the job of doctors to do their best for severely damaged patients, but sometimes, as in Giffords’ case, “we are wise to acknowledge miracles.”

Congresswoman Giffords is making an amazingly remarkable recovery.  Although I do not agree with her Conservative Blue Dog politics, I am thankful that she is doing so well and hope she fully recovers.

This is turning into an almost offensive soap opera.

The scene: A Havana Safeway (In their wildest dreams!)

A mad shooter, inspired by Marco Rubio, rushes up and guns down a dozen people, six die almost immediately. A local politician, a Fidel wannabe, is one of the surviving victims. She is rushed to the FREE hospital ten miles away. The other five, mere proles, are administered first aid, for free of course, and told to hang in there until their relative importance on the food chain can be determined.

The politician is provided the best emergency medical care there is in Cuba…

If you were Gabby Giffords, would you rather be shot in Cuba, where your treatment is free, or in the US, where you’ll have to pony up a big deductible, over and above the scandalous premiums your money grubbing insurance company charges?

Be honest now.
