Gates Warns Against Wars Like Iraq and Afghanistan

Defense Secretary Robert Gates meets with Afghanistan Defense Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak, back to camera, Wednesday at the Pentagon.

In a critique of recent U.S. foreign policy, Defense Secretary Robert Gates openly told an audience of West Point cadets that it would be unwise for the nation to venture into another war like Iraq or Afghanistan. —JCL

The New York Times:

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates bluntly told an audience of West Point cadets on Friday that it would be unwise for the United States to ever fight another war like Iraq or Afghanistan, and that the chances of carrying out a change of government in that fashion again were slim.

“In my opinion, any future defense secretary who advises the president to again send a big American land army into Asia or into the Middle East or Africa should ‘have his head examined,’ as General MacArthur so delicately put it,” Mr. Gates told an assembly of Army cadets here.

That reality, he said, meant that the Army would have to reshape its budget, since potential conflicts in places like Asia or the Persian Gulf were more likely to be fought with air and sea power, rather than with conventional ground forces.

Richard: I think that the cause of why there is no revolution in America is conformism, and not because capitalism is working for americans. If you think about it the living standards of most americans is getting real low, millions of americans do not have access to health, and because of neoliberalism they are working in neoliberal low-wage service-economy jobs like waitress, delivery drivers, and other blue collar dirty jobs (The USA has become a hell of third world jobs with real low labor conditions and standards for most americans)

Another consequence of neoliberalism in the last 10 to 20 years is the very expensive university tuition fees. Because of that americans are unable to join a college. And without a university millions of people are unskilled and are forced to be floor cleaners, delivery drivers and low-wage jobs.

And according to an article i read in Globalresearch.ca 10% of US citizens own 90% of the wealth of America, so wealth spreading and high living standards to the majority of americans is a myth. In fact there are 6 million American families who live with food-stamps as only source of income.

Watch this video by Economist Fred Goldstein of The Workers World Party talking about how 6 million american families live with food stamps as only source of income, and many of them are forced to sell their food stamps at the bodegas, 7-11s and grocery stores so that they can buy school supply and medicines for their children. The majority of americans are poors and beating the bullets:

          Quoting Spooky-43

Sorry Spooky… but the $ystem is complete-lie broken! It is irredeemably corrupt. As we learned in the $o-vietnam era… ‘we gotta burn down the god damn village in order to save it!’

The time has come for a full blown revolution against the capitalist/fascist ruling class in the UNITED $TATES OF PERPETUAL WAR PROFITEERING. And needless to say, all revolutions are inherently violent.

The evil machinations of Goldman $acks bankster gambler addicts in the Wall $treet casino and their war mongering cousins, the Pentagon boners in the military industrial complex, suggests that the talking is over! I vote for open rebellion, civil unrest and guerrilla warfare against the ruling class of good cop/bad cop politics.

You are a ewe! Yesss… Spooky, ewe are one of the sheep, one of faster poo-food Amerikans… out there in the land of corn-$yrup.

The day is coming fast… where there will be no safe road in Amerika for a Ferrari or a Bentley. Mansions will be burning.

Liberal policy is that if a nation is not attacking our
country, don’t attack them, but if they do attack our
country, wipe them out.

No nation that the United States has attacked, had
attacked the United States.  The attackers from
9/11/01 were Saudi Arabians, our ally, so we
attacked and tried to wipe out two other countries and
Saudi Arabia is still our ally.  Now Gates says we
shouldn’t do that any more.  Duh.

If the world doesn’t get rid of America soon, we’ll all end up its slaves! You think I’m joking? No way!

America is the most evil Empire that the world has ever seen. It claims to want democracy, human rights, etc while all the time it’s been putting in place its plan to control the whole world for its own benefit.

I am sickened by America and everything it stands for: endless war, greed, duplicity, torture, there is nothing too low for America to engage in.

Let’s get rid of America. Join the PEACE movement (Prevent Empire America Controlling Earth) while there is time.

Please!

This pontification by Gates indicates the same self-deceit as the “swearing off” promises of alcoholics who finally come to realize that they are addicts.  They promise to quit by “cutting back.”  Instead of drinking too much, they are going to drink just a little. Instead of “hard liquor” it will only be beer or port from now on.
The idea of cutting out booze altogether is something that “terrifies” them. Hence it seldom crosses their minds.
If war could only be broadly recognized as the addiction it is—if the entire MIC could become known as the universal killing machine it is—we might hope for release from our self-inflicted sickness.
Perhaps the day is not as far off as some think.
As the horrors increase, the insanity becomes more evident and the havoc more disgusting, pointless and expensive.

RE: It’s not promising.

agreed, not promising - indeed, not affordable - question: what is?

IMHO, top 3 options:

1) proxy wars:  provoking weak client and hostile states to war with neighbors, easily demonized through cheaply executed false flags

2) civil wars: factions supported and insighted through cheaply executed false flags, chaos ensues, day’s end puppet’s installed

3) post-modern coups: so-called ‘people power, color revolution’ destabilization, end of day weak ‘democratic’ coalition soon collapses as economy is undermined (e.g. Soros-style raid on state bonds and currency), day’s end puppet’s installed

___________

day’s end, hegemony is never promising, but no question, making covert war via intelligence operatives and the internet is far and away more affordable, even economically stimulating; e.g. IMF loans billions on condition 99% come back to Anglo/Americans as military materiel/ordinance purchases… jobs, jobs, jobs!

day’s end, humanitarian development (both domestic and foreign) better serves everyone; conslusion: impossible for empires ruled by war monger plutocrats in service to oligarchs

Thank you, Spooky-43. A point overlooked by some on this thread is that Gates, a Republican, is arguably the leading proponent in the country right now for LESS defense spending.

“Do we really need eleven carrier strike groups for another 30 years when no other country has more than one?”
- Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, May 2010

Progressives should be supporting this guy in boldface caps!!! Although they’re admittedly much too busy undermining everyone who wants to reduce defense spending to bother taking action to actually reduce it.

I believe the next generation of Americans will grapple with our defense policy and budget. No doubt about it. Our military posture is not affordable at best, and is impractical for achieving actual defense of our vital interests at worst. The question is whether or not liberals will play a part in fashioning our future military defense strategy.

It’s not promising.

Too bad no one had the guts to inquire about Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Powell and Rice having their heads examined back when it really counted (actually, I’d still be interested in an open-braincase autopsy on those folks).

But I think Gates is just trying to placate the few Obama fans that are still out there. Gates’ll be gone when President Palin replaces him with James Dobson or Glenn Beck or someone else from the Armageddon gang.

Even with Gates still there, future wars are still very much on the table, especially those involving drones and robots—you know, the kinds of things that kill from a great distance, so the 19-year-old remote-video pilots in Nevada can’t actually see the carnage.

AeroVironment, a high-tech firm in Monrovia California, has successfully demonstrated its Pentagon-funded “Nano Hummingbird” (Google it to read) that looks just like an ordinary bird but is a remote-piloted drone. It’s for battlefield surveillance purposes, but someday it will carry a Nano Tomahawk missile or Nano Nuke.

Oh, the possibilities. I can’t wait.

The CIA call it blowback - an unintended consequence of U.S military actions in other countries. We are the most hated nation in the world, not because of our freedoms or western ways of life, but for our foreign policy. The CIA and Charlie Wilson armed Bin Laden and set up his training camp to train his base to fight USSR. The CIA then “set up” USSR to fight the Afgan people. After USSR bombed Afganistan and left in their wake death and destruction, the CIA made a quick exit, Bin Laden knew he had been mainipulated and deceived by the CIA. Bin Laden, once an ally of the U.S.A became our most feared enemy. Terrorist attacks orchestrated by Bin Laden, are called “blowback” or retaliation for being manipulated and deceived by the CIA and causing death and destruction within middle eastern countries. Our unmanned drones continue to kill suspected terrorist in Afganistan and Pakistan. Unfortunately, these same drones have killed hundreds if not thousands of bystanders. The CIA and our Military Complex call these bystanders collateral damage. The Afgan and Palestani people call these bystanders loved ones. And our military claim they are on a mission to win the hearts and minds of the Afganistan and Palestani people.  Instead of being feared for our military prowess, we should be respeced for our dedication to human rights and life.

Iran: Time for a New Approach [by Robert Gates, Zbigniew Brzezinski, CFR]
Council on Foreign Relations ^ | July, 2004 | Robert Gates, et al
Posted on November 8, 2006 11:33:32 AM PST by freedomdefender

The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have positioned American troops along Iran’s
borders, making the United States and Iran wary competitors and neighbors
who nonetheless possess overlapping interests. Meanwhile, questions continue
to be raised about Iran’s nuclear program and its involvement with terrorism.
Clearly, contending with Iran will constitute one of the most complex and
pressing challenges facing future U.S. administrations. This informative report,
which sparked sharp debate in Washington and extensive coverage by U.S. and
international media, offers a timely new approach.

Rejecting the conventional wisdom that Iran is on the verge of another
revolution, the report calls for the United States to reassess its long-standing
policy of non-engagement with the current Iranian government. The product of
an independent Task Force chaired by Zbigniew Brzezinski, President Carter’s
national security adviser, and Robert M. Gates, director of central intelligence
during the George H.W. Bush administration, the report highlights several areas
in which U.S. interests would be better served by selective engagement with
Tehran, and breaks with current U.S. policy by encouraging a new strategy.

This report focuses on developments inside Iran, tapping into the Task Force
members’ extensive expertise on Iranian politics and society. It includes a
comprehensive chronology of important dates in U.S.-Iranian history, economic
and demographic facts about Iran, and reference materials on Iranian state
institutions and governance.

This article is not about ending war, it is about fighting war differently.

There will never be an end to war until humans cease to covet, steal, murder, oppress, abuse and otherwise commit acts of inhumanity.  Which hasn’t happened yet, and doesn’t look like it is going to change real soon.  Hatred and intolerance is alive and well in every camp.

The left like to give the illusion that they are anti-war, and anti-killing, but nothing could be further from the truth.  They are responsible for as many, or more, deaths and oppression as any other system or ideology.

And given the remarks by many on this blog site, and others like it, nothing is going to change soon.  Example,  Richard Ralph Roehl’s comment below, “Amerika’s $uper rich had better wake up and employ common $ense for the common wealth… or we will kill you!”

Roehl is no better than those he condemns, he just has no power as of this time.  But give him power,  and he becomes just another killing machine, including judge and jury.  Roehl decides that the “super rich” should die if they don’t do what he says.  He makes a sweeping generalization that all so-called “super rich” are evil and worthy of being executed for not living out his ideology.

Roehl shows that, irregardless of ideology, humans are about killing other humans, always have been and always will be.  There is no relief in sight.  The only reason that some groups can appear peaceful is that they have someone else doing their dirty work for them.

Besides, violence must be cool, otherwise blood and gore would not be a staple in so many types of entertainment.  Even the kids love it.

If there is an answer to the murderous minds of men, then what is it?  If you don’t have the answer, then quit being so hypocritical.  Transform your own mind before you criticise others.  You are no better than Gates or any soldier out there.  They do the work given them by the commander-in-chief, who is elected by the people.  If you want the military to do something different, then elect someone different.
If you can’t seem to do that, then why do you even bother to vote?

Most senior military officers know that it is absurd to insert large land armies into the mideast or fareast Asia.  Gates is not suddenly blurting forth with some long-subdued truth, which he was not able to voice until close to retirement.  Some of you people are naive as hell.

WARNING:

The foreign policy of the UNITED $TATES OF PERPETUAL WAR PROFITEERING… is delusional, violent and criminally insane. Amerika has devolved into a terrible beast, an evil beast that threatens the very existence of humanity (a.k.a.: ewe-man-unkind).

Yesss… it is war after war after war after war after war… ad nauseum… ad infinitum. And the glorious [sic] invasions and occupations of Iraq-NAM, Afghanistan-NAM, Western-Pak-a-nuke-NAM, etc… is NOT the craziest of the crazies. Amerika’s blind and foolish support for the ethno-racist Zionist bigots in the theo-crazy of Israel is a paragon example of pure insanity.

Indeed! See how Amerika (at the urging of AIPAC) continually enables the criminal $yndicate in Israel to commit kidnapping, torture, murder, piracy on the high seas, ethnic cleansing and genocide against Palestinians in the WARSAW GHETTO OF GAZA! And yet… the Amerikan ruling class turns a blind eye to the evil anti-Amerikan machinations of the Israeli Mossad.

Hey! You can’t fool this dog! Old Coyote Knose… the $tink of 9-11 is even more putrid than all the lone gunman lies.

What to do? Well… the Knose knows that ASS-ASS-IN-NATION is a politician’s ultimate achievement. And it’s easier to burn down a village than it is to build one. Yesss… arson and rioting in every major U.$. city will be a sobering wake-up call for Amerika’s ruling class… not to mention Joe $tack suicide bombers breeding Timothy McVeigh franchises.

Amerika’s $uper rich had better wake up and employ common $ense for the common wealth… or we will kill you! The handwriting is on the wall! The wealth gap between haves and have $nots in capitalist/fascist Amerika has become interminably wide! There is a seething a rage percolating across the hinterlands… and it wants a pound of flesh from the ruling class. Even more dire… it want to roast that flesh over the flames of burning mansions!

Gates development of truth about the wars hasn’t in any way
caused him to see fit not to wreak havoc on the Common
Population of the nation in his charge, so his development of truth
must be another propaganda ploy,  although
retiring, he is still in the military and is not concerned about
receiving a demotion.  Could it be the falling of the U.S. Air Base at
Tripoli, Libya to the rebel forces?

Undoubtedly, his understanding came after the
fact the US Base at Tripoli had been lost to
rebel forces.

http://www.salon.com/news/libya/?story=/news/feature/2011/02/26/Gadhafi_arming_supporters_Tripoli

“Friday evening, pro-Gadhafi troops with tanks attacked the
Misrata Air Base east of Tripoli that had fallen into rebel
hands.
They succeeded in retaking part of it in battles with
residents and army units who had joined the anti-Gadhafi uprising,
said a doctor and a resident wounded in the battle on the edge of
opposition-held Misrata, Libya’s third-largest city, about 120 miles
(200 kilometers) from the capital.”

“Even in the Gadhafi-held pocket of northwestern Libya around
Tripoli, several cities have also fallen to the rebellion. Militiamen
and pro-Gadhafi troops were repelled when they launched attacks
trying to take back opposition-held territory in Zawiya and Misrata
in fighting that killed at least 30 people.”

“In Misrata, a resident said the opposition was still in control of
the city, which was calm Saturday, with many shops open and a
local committee running civic affairs. But the opposition only held
parts of the sprawling air base after Friday’s attack by Gadhafi
supporters, he added.”

“The opposition also held complete control of Sabratha, a town
west of Tripoli famed for nearby ancient Roman ruins, with no
police or any security forces associated with the Gadhafi regime,
said Khalid Ahmed, a resident. He added that tribes were trying to
organize a march on Tripoli, although a checkpoint outside the
capital would stop anyone from entering.”

‘“All of Libya is together,” Ahmed said. “We are not far from
toppling the regime.”“

“More than 2,800 Chinese workers landed in Heraklion on the
Greek island of Crete aboard a Greek ship Saturday, while another
2,200 Chinese arrived in Valletta, the capital of Malta, on a ship
from the eastern Libyan port of Benghazi.”

“More than 20,000 have arrived since early this week, said Heinke
Veit of the European Union Humanitarian Aid group. Food, water
and medical help is available, as are facilities to contact their
families.”

Too little too late - if Gates is serious he should recommend immediate withdrawal. An analysis should be conducted of how the American people were duped or duped themselves into believing these were wars of necessity. Might it be possible that a lesson could be learned? Somehow I doubt it, because public memory is short - the old dictum about forgetting the past and repeating it.

It is difficult to discern just what Gates is talking about, but one thing is certain:  He is not talking about how to end wars—or end war as national policy.
Maybe he is trying to sell computerized war via the cowardly drone method, but selling cowardice may be pretty hard to satisfy the full-blooded allure of stabbing, shooting, blowing up, tearing down, kicking in, etc.  His (revealingly unaware) line about “...clerical duties terrifies me.” is a killer in itself.
In short, just what IS going to happen next is the problem.  The MIC is not going to go quietly, you can count on that. Notice he doesn’t even mention that.  Nor does anybody else.  Why?  Because none of them know what the heck to do with it. It has reached the stage where it is a howling beast that must be fed.  Unfortunately, war feeds it.

“For those who read beyond the 1st paragraph of Shanker’s article, its clear that what Gates is terrified of is that the military won’t be able to attract the same caliber of warrior… “

The above comment is fiction contrived by someone whose agenda is to discredit the character of people working for the military. Please do not think he is pining for the good old days of hand-to-hand combat. Nor is he the least interested in fostering a better armed force. So, why bother with truth or accuracy?

In his speech, Gates praised the military for its ability to learn and adapt. Gates also warned about the difficulty of staying sharp as a warrior without actual war. Just like it’s hard to remain a top-tier athlete without competition.

Note the phrase “big American land army”. That’s his key point. It has nothing to doing with “joystick warfare”, as the commentator would lead you to believe. Right before that remark, Gates said, “The strategic rationale for swift-moving expeditionary forces, be they Army or Marines, airborne infantry or special operations, is self-evident…”

If you really want the truth about Gates’ “fear”, ask Gates. You don’t need the (mis)interpretation of a commentator:

“Men and women in the prime of their professional lives, who may have been responsible for the lives of scores or hundreds of troops, or millions of dollars in assistance, or engaging or reconciling warring tribes, may find themselves in a cube all day re-formatting PowerPoint slides, preparing quarterly training briefs, or assigned an ever-expanding array of clerical duties,” Mr. Gates said. “The consequences of this terrify me.”

I think Gates overstated the concern, but, to an audience of cadets, I think a warning about complacency is very appropriate, and I for one am content to have the Secretary of Defense tell the defense forces not to expect perpetual war.

Without wars once in a while, how can we hope to keep our “military industrial complex” trained and ready to take over the government ?
It’s “Seven Days In May” except that the corporations are pulling the military strings.

Thousands of civilians begged both Bush and Obama not to enter into this kind of war, knowing full well it could not be won and would end in disaster.  Why is it that civilians are smarter than our Military?  Gates is still not offering good advise as he still advocates an air war, which potentially could be worse than a ground war.

Gates mastery of the obvious is astounding.

I guess this information is better late than never.

To bad military personnel have to retire before they can tell the truth.

Seemingly, Gates is telling a truth ( if not THE truth) and is not yet retired.

To take this subject to the next level I would wonder why the military budget, based upon huge global conflicts with other nuclear powers, is not under closer scrutiny?  It seems far easier to inflict budgetary restrictions upon children upon seniors, upon women, upon the health of our nation, than it is to dare suggest a cut in the rather extreme bloat of our military expenditures.

QUOTE (NYT’s reporter Thom Shanker):

“That reality, [Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates] said, meant that the Army would have to reshape its budget, since potential conflicts in places like Asia or the Persian Gulf were more likely to be fought with air and sea power, rather than with conventional ground forces.”
____________

Gates was just dutifully instructing the West Point cadets in the objective political reality that Bush and Obama failed to see as clearly as Clinton did: The American sheeple will accept any war that doesn’t risk American lives, especially if they think it might make more oil available cheaper (to them at the pump).

For those who read beyond the 1st paragraph of Shanker’s article, its clear that what Gates is terrified of is that the military won’t be able to attract the same caliber of warrior when the warriors won’t be personally participating in the wars… up close and personal, on the ground in the hairy action.

Even the poorest people living over rich resources can defend themselves against ground troops. The ongoing resource wars will be waged the way that cowardly chicken hawks prefer: America’s high-tech remote controlled weapons will dominate or destroy the defenseless dots scurrying about on the ground (over there) and upon the screens of gamers playing safely within concrete bunkers at home (over here).

Fascist states allow elections when the people can always be relied upon to vote for fascists.

Gates is absolutely right, going to war with Iraq and Afghanistan was stupid, a terrific drain on our resources. If we have to invade and go to war with someone, we should do it to Switzerland, or Lichtenstein, or the Cayman Islands, someplace with a lot of money, so our whole nation can make a profit on it, not just our greedy ‘defense’ industry.

Looks like the Pentagon is going to have to scrap it’s plans to invade and ‘Nation Build’ China. Or depose Gates.

To bad military personnel have to retire before they
can tell the truth.  It is a shame they are always
being trotted out to tell what they are told to say
as if it were what they actually think, if they want to
be able to retire with honor.
