Peru former President Alberto Fujimori at his trial in Lima in 2008.

Peru’s Supreme Court has confirmed a verdict finding Alberto Fujimori guilty of ordering the kidnapping and murder of 25 dissidents during his presidency from 1990 to 2000. His 25-year sentence marks the first time a democratically elected Latin American ruler was found guilty of human rights abuses in his own country.  —JCL

The BBC:

Peru’s Supreme Court has upheld a 25-year jail sentence imposed on former President Alberto Fujimori.

The term was handed down last April for ordering the security forces to carry out killings and kidnappings.

Fujimori, who led Peru from 1990 to 2000, returned from exile in late 2007 to face his accusers.

It was the first time a democratically elected Latin American leader was found guilty of human rights abuses in his own country.

Fujimori had denied overseeing a death squad as part of a “dirty war” against suspected Maoist Shining Path guerrillas in the early 1990s.

But he was convicted of directing the killings of 25 people, following a 15-month trial.

Bush and Cheney, in prison, for the rest of their natural lives? If only! Obama, impeached for the mismanagement of Afghanistan and the broken campaign promises that elected him? If only!
The CIA, which by the way was started with mostly ex-Nazi Party members, disbanded and the perpetrators of crimes against humanity brought to the Hague, and convicted of these crimes? If only!
We, the people, the true government of the US, not having to put up with the multi-national corporations raping the environment and bringing to justice those men and women who have committed unspeakable atrocities in the name of profit, imprisoned for the rest of their natural lives? If only!
If only, we the people would rise up against the moneyed elite and force them to the bar of justice, then we would see a complete cultural change in the United States. Until then, no f@#%%%^^^&^& way are these scenarios ever going to happen. For the American people like their sense of superiority and place of ‘ruling’ the world.
Given time, the derivatives market crash is coming and when it does, no longer will the American people be able to afford the luxuries of today and yesteryear. We will pay the price for the Clinton Administration’s repeal of the Glass-Stegall Act, which separated the community banks from Wall Street influence.
Today, the Obama Administration is in the pockets and hands of robber barons and thieves. No longer is he the supposed man of the people, but a shill for the moneyed elite, who in their madness are plotting the overthrow of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. We will have one world government unless the people rise up and shut these greedy bastards down for good. Think about it people, a world free of the influences of the Central Banks of the World, no more war, for greed is the major cause of war, no more poverty, no more hunger, by the way, food is a right not a privilege. A world in which every life is cherished and nourished to perform to their full potential, this could happen, if and only if the people rise up against the money masters and kick them to the curb.

Commune115, Litl Bludot, Xntrk you’re so right, in terms of rounding up their own crooks and bringing them to justice, they are light-years ahead of us. pundaint, in a way, by doing this, Peru IS bringing democracy to the US. Somebody asked me “What do you think of US Democracy?” the other day. Borrowing the old one-liner, I replied “I think it would be a great idea!”

Perhaps one day Peru can bring democracy to the United States.  First
they’ll probably have to establish bases in most of the member countries
in the United Nations.  What a concept, one law for all!

Fujimori goes to jail and we plot more coups in Latin America and the Caribbean. Closing the School of the Americas at Fort Benning GA would be a good start, but it ain’t gonna happen anytime soon. Perhaps when we set up the guillotines on the Mall in Washington, DC…

Chutzpah is alive and well!

What’s still amazing to me is how egocentric the U.S. population can be.  Our
presidents have ordered murders on a mass scale and yet they seem to be exempt
from prosecution.

At the very least, Bush and Cheny, should be in jail, and Obama should be in the
process of impeachment for war crimes and jailed immediately. As should all of
our top brass, all way done to the grunts.  Then the CIA should be disbanded and
those involved in torture and disappearances jailed as well.  If any members of
congress can be proved to be involved, their prosecution should commence
immediately as well.

Let’s hope this is the same fate that will await the currently “elected,” US-funded neofascist ruler of Colombia, Alvaro Uribe.
