Just days after President Hosni Mubarak resigned his seat of power in Egypt, former Interior Minister Habib el-Adly was arrested on charges of corruption. His trial began Saturday in Cairo.

El-Adly remains under investigation for his role in the use of deadly force by police during last month’s uprising.

The BBC:

Egypt’s feared former Interior Minister, Habib el-Adly, has denied charges of corruption at the opening of his trial in Cairo.

“It didn’t happen,” he said to allegations of laundering money and unlawfully acquiring public money.

He was arrested in mid-February, days after President Hosni Mubarak resigned in the face of popular protest.

The hearing was adjourned to 2 April as the defence argued for more time to study court papers.

Tom Friedmans “Killa KwesChun” on the NYT OpEd page:

What are we doing spending $110 billion this year supporting corrupt and unpopular regimes in Afghanistan and Pakistan that are almost identical to the governments we’re applauding the Arab people for overthrowing?

Answer: Ben Ali and Moubarak were pure happenstance, Karzai and Yousaf Raza Gillani are selected “Strategic Partners” in the WOT (War On Terrorism).

Yeah right ... Wot’s that again?
