Four of the five City Council members, including the mayor, shown in this capture from the city of Bell’s website were arrested Tuesday.

Police have arrested current and former city officials who are accused of pilfering millions from the taxpayers of Bell. The small Los Angeles suburb gained national notoriety as a poster town for bureaucratic corruption, and authorities wasted no time investigating and arresting the alleged nest featherers.

Los Angeles Times:

Los Angeles County Dist. Atty. Steve Cooley filed charges against eight current and former Bell officials Tuesday, alleging that they misappropriated $5.5 million in public funds. Robert Rizzo, Bell’s former city manager, has been charged with 53 counts of misappropriation of public funds and conflict of interest.

The charges come after a dramatic morning in which authorities swept through Bell and other cities, arresting former and current Bell officials.

Will ANY money ever come back to the citizens of Bell?  I believe that they are the
most affected. No Big speeches people just think on this.

Not to deface the people of that community
which I read about, but these are the small fish
and not to matter a contractual agreement, if
these son’s a bitches made out like bandits, they
deserve hard ass time and fines.

But these aren’t the only ones needing attention,
the whole at the national level need the focus
these few crooks are getting, and may they get
more than the hope they don’t get.

I despise these guys of course, but for weeks NPR & KPCC & KCRW have been telling us their contracts with City of Bell are airtight and legit, however wrongheaded & evil they might be.  I’m uneasy with prosecutions made to please torch-bearing mobs.

I also haven’t heard anyone persuasively refute Robert Rizzo’s claim that his compensation was contractually tied to the amount he saved the city.  The argument that deserves a fair hearing.
