Florida Requires Doctors to Evaluate Fetus Survival

Florida Republican Gov. Rick Scott on Friday signed a bill prohibiting women from getting abortions if the fetus is deemed able to survive outside the womb.

HB 1047, which replaces a state law that prohibits women form obtaining abortions 24 weeks after pregnancy unless their lives are in danger, requires that abortion seekers consult a doctor to determine whether a fetus can survive.

Naturally, critics, which include nearly every group representing women in Florida, are furious at the law’s trampling of women’s rights.

“By signing this bill into law, Governor Rick Scott is taking Florida two steps backwards,” Planned Parenthood’s Dr. Sujatha Prabhakaran said in a statement. “This law limits health exceptions and could risk women’s health and lives.”

Doctors who violate the law could suffer a criminal charge or administrative discipline.
