The coffin of a suicide bombing victim is transported on the roof of a car from a hospital in Baghdad on Monday.

A female suicide bomber set off an explosives-lined vest in a crowd of pilgrims in northeast Baghdad on Monday, killing 54 people and wounding 109 and fueling fears of more violence before next month’s key elections, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Los Angeles Times:

The bomber hid the explosives under her voluminous black abaya, or cloak, and detonated them among pilgrims gathered at a hospitality tent in the neighborhood of Bab al Shams. The dead included five women employed to search female pilgrims for bombs, police said.

... The pilgrims were among hundreds of thousands setting off to walk to the shrine city of Karbala to mark Arbaeen, the end of a 40-day mourning period for Imam Hussein, a 7th century figure revered by Shiites. Traditionally, residents set up hospitality tents to serve refreshments to the pilgrims.

captRon…you must not forget that in there time and place the female sex is
highly disregarded and barely regarded as a human ,....in her mind (and i don’t
speak for everyone or anyone at all when i say this but).. Lets say she was givin
the task , and if she refused she would be punished, punishment could or
would mean a lifetime of pain, where as death would be quick and (perhaps
even) painless… don’t you think that this women, given these fact would be
enough to drive her to rid herself of the burdens of her life, don’t you think
anyone in her situation given these fact would drive them to do as she did, and
that toped of with there religious beliefs…. where they could be promised with
happiness and more ,waiting on the other side…... still more…. you must
remember that in this world
there are senile people that wish to make others lives as horrid as theirs , who
if given the chance who not hesitate to do what se did…..regardless of these
words
i don’t don’t know the facts and go be what i feel…. i only wish for you to read
this and (as you said) be at least a little enlightened ... by the way hello… my
name is… well egh… and i am 15 no joke… took a while and it hope it
helped…. the email is not mine but comment back…

Out of ignorance, I would like to hear from someone who might possibly enlighten me. What can a woman be offered for her soul in order to become a suicide weapon? Certainly not virgins or anything close to what I have heard they promise the men. Or are they just told they must do so or be put to punishment? Religion can be a strong motivation for people, but to kill for it? I don’t know how one could support their religion without compassion for another to believe in theirs as long as it doesn’t infringe on a right to believe either’s way.

“they hate us because of our freedom”

Tell ‘em to wait a few years. The way our freedoms are disappearing we’ll be on a par with “them” in the not too distant future.

I wonder if we can imagine what it took to bring that woman there.  I believe that if we were invaded, we might begin to understand the rage.  I believe that if our whole apartment buildings would be destroyed, bombed, or the building demolished because someone did an act of resistance, many killed for the actions of a few, how we would feel.  Consider the righteous anger we’d display.

“Defense becomes offense, the protection of your children becomes the murder of another’s, his threat becomes your preemption. You kill to stop the killing. Then you wonder, Are you the victim, or the slayer? But you are both.”
(James Carroll)

Respect.

I don’t understand what is preventing the United States leadership from learning from past mistakes.

Time and time again the brash, idealistic Americans have rushed in where fools fear to tread, sometimes even possibly with the best of intentions, only to suddenly realize too late they’re in way over their understanding and capability.

These ancient societies - Viet Nam, Afghanistan, Iran, and now Yemen, and many more - have been in existence for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. They’ve had more wars than America has had birthdays. Their cultures and languages are much richer and more complex than anything that America has experienced. It certainly takes a special kind of arrogance mixed with ignorance to think the “American Way” is a one-size-fits-all solution to the world’s problems.

But that doesn’t stop the Yankees from gearing up to jump in with all guns blazing. And for what? To kill thousands of themselves, blow billions of dollars worth of munitions and infrastructure to smithereens and accomplish little more than to make matters worse.

Oh sure… there are injustices a mile deep in these societies - anathema to the “American way.” But just because America CAN doesn’t give it the RIGHT to just march in and take over. So… America keeps on getting thumped on the nose. I guess it will just keep repeating its mistakes until it finally sinks in to MIND IT’S OWN BUSINESS. (And it’s own business does not include interfering in other people’s!).

The person who rushes in to resolve a husband/wife dispute often winds up worse off than either of them.

My opinion, anyway.

There is no animal on this planet as insane and dangerous as the human beings that infect it.

Can you imagine what Earth without homo idioticus would be like?

Perhaps I’ll live long enough to understand what that female murderer thought she was going to accomplish.
