Getting less Loko: Phusion Projects is complying with the FDA’s warning against speeding up alcoholic drinks.

Fans of Four Loko alcoholic “energy drinks” are about to discover that their favored concoction, which blends the downer that is alcohol with the upper that is caffeine, is about to lose that speedy sensation, thanks to the vigilant work of the FDA. Alcoholic drinks that contain caffeine are now officially on the Food and Drug Administration’s warning list and have been banned in several states already, making them instantly more appealing to youngsters across America.  —KA

The New York Times:

The popularity of the drinks has exploded over the last few months, and there have been numerous reports of young people falling ill after drinking them. A brand called Four Loko—a fruit-flavored malt beverage that has an alcohol content of 12 percent and as much caffeine as a cup of coffee—came under particular scrutiny after students who drank it this fall at Ramapo College in Mahwah, N.J., and Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash., ended up in emergency rooms, some with high levels of alcohol poisoning.

On Tuesday, Phusion Projects, the Chicago company that makes Four Loko, said it would stop putting caffeine in the drinks. The company’s founders said in a statement that while they still believed it was safe to blend caffeine and alcohol, they wanted to cooperate with regulators.

Well sure ban this stuff. If the kids are totally
bombed and AWAKE they might tune in Red Eye or watch
a Hannity rerun or maybe try and drive to 7/11 for
more Loko suds. Can’t have that. Better that they be
bombed, asleep and choke to death on their vomit. Oh
wait, sorry NaCly dog, I know that might give them an
idea to go back to Prohibition.
On the positive side, Obama’s gang is just creating
more conservatives. Go team Obama! Next they should
ban heterosexual intercourse. That will really
galvanize the youngsters for our team. Not that I am
recommending or approving of ‘relations’ outside of
marriage.

The problem is, while the FDA is fucking around with stupid shit like this, they are neglecting their real duties inspecting imported fish from China, Thailand, etc.

Pat, Fat, and ITW:

Thank you.

If the Tea Party’s raison d’etre needs further explanation, look no farther.

ITW- you know that 38 cents you DON’T get back from Uncle in New Jersey? This is the kind of shit it’s wasted on.

That’s about 100,000th of a penny. About $.3799999 were wasted in the wars, tax cuts, bailouts and subsidies to wealthy agri-biz.

I fully agree with you on this one Rico.  I absolutely hate the nanny type protect them from themselves laws.  Also notice from the article:

“In August, an 18-year-old in Palm Coast, Fla., died after drinking Four Loko in combination with diet pills. The following month, a 20-year-old in Tallahassee, Fla., started playing with a gun and fatally shot himself after drinking several cans of Four Loko over a number of hours.”

Notice how neither of these people were even of legal drinking age.  That’s one of the tactics I abhor the most some dumb kid does some dumb thing and the parents rally around some dumb cause to avoid admitting they raised a dumb kid.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the companies behind red bull and rockstar energy drinks had lobbied for this ban.  The recent fruity caffeine and alcohol drink popularity started with bars offering mixed drinks made with those drinks.  An all in one offering may have been dinging their market share.

I guess those in the FDA’s banning department were having a slow day and needed something to do.

We have too much federal government, it is misdirected and overcompensated for what it does.

It’s for the kids, Man. Think about the kids.

Yes kids, now you will have to buy your alcohol/energy drinks from the crack dealer on the corner. Pick me up a couple dimes, while you are there, thanks.

When you mix up a Hairy Buffalo, you must now add 4 bottles (100ct.) of No-Doze.

You can always just throw a couple No-Doze into a bottle of Night Train Express. (Freeze before drinking).

Are these the same people that are entrusted with running the economy, and protecting us from the “greedy banksters”?

When will this fucking nightmare end?

Ronald Reagan banned the Quaalude. Bill Clinton banned analogs, like MDMA. What the Hell kind of idiot would ban a drink made up of two totally legal ingredients? The same people that banned fresh, unpasteurized milk?
