Farewell to a Conservative Gentleman

Tony Blankley stands behind his former boss Newt Gingrich in this 1997 photo.

Tony Blankley, the “right” in KCRW’s “Left, Right & Center,” has died of stomach cancer. He was 62. Truthdig Editor Robert Scheer remembers his public radio sparring partner as “a conservative gentleman in the best sense. Tony was always well-informed, decent, with a wry sense of humor. I never knew him to lower his standards. It was a pleasure jousting with him.”

Blankley was a child actor whose British accent disguised a uniquely American life. Like the president he worked for, he went from Hollywood to politics, with a 10-year stint as a prosecutor in between. Blankley was the voice of Newt Gingrich during the former House speaker’s political peak and he continued to support Newt with his commentaries on television, radio and in print.

Even his enemies had to concede he was a thoughtful and witty man, which is why he didn’t have so many.  —PZS

I too am a big fan of LRC.  The show is an excellent
and informative round table, and the mix of
characters and opinions combined with civility made
the forum a rarity.  Tony’s contribution will be
missed.  And unlike the comments above, I actually
agreed with Tony most of the time, disagree with Bob
most of the time.  But I can and do refrain from the
name-calling as in some of the prior posts because I
do not disrespect people whose opinions I don’t agree
with. And they are just opinions, neither side has a
monopoly in right v wrong, truth v lies.  That is
the purpose of LRC, to hear multiple sides without
the name calling some of the prior posts contain.  I
respect & like Bob and enjoy his rants which
sometimes persuade me to change my open mind.  It
may not be possible to replace Tony, but I hope the
show finds someone who can articulate the
conservative side of things as well as Tony did. I
did not know Tony personally, but I feel I knew him
and have a sadness and sense of personal loss in my
heart.  Condolences to his family.

I must concur with the general sentiment here.  LRC has long been my favorite radio
program and Tony Blankley has been a major part of it.  While I rarely agreed with his
take on things, hearing him and Robert Sheer debate the issues of the day from opposite
ends of the political spectrum and usually respectfully disagree without ever getting petty
or personal made it seem, for 29 minutes a week, like maybe we still are all in this
together.  He will be missed.

I’ve been listening to him for years on LRC, and had no idea he was sick.  Like most of the comments already made, I pretty much never agreed with him.  (Although he did come around on our need to get out of Afghanistan).  He was always civil and thoughtful, and funny too.  Yup, gonna miss him no doubt. RIP Tony.

Liberals are soooo stupid.  Someone like Blankley can spew all sort of hateful drivel, but because his language was pleasant and he has a British accent, he is lauded as a gentleman.  I thought him a bought-and-paid-for stooge and piece of excrement.

I never liked Blankley, and I still don’t, but I am going to miss his persona.  His opposition to Eleanor Clift on the MacLaughlin Show allowed me to see that the host’s cluelessness on many issues as well as his dumb predictions could be overlooked with such worthy conservatives and liberals going at it “across the aisle” (at least in the studio).  I never agreed with Blankley and thought him a disappointed hopeful host himself, perhaps at Fox, but I thought his act on that show was First Class.  Enjoy your complete Nothingness, Tony!  (That is the atheist heaven.)

I often listened to Left-Right-and Center and would yell back at the radio as Tony would go on with some totally right-wing, conservative, Heritage Foundation talking point. He was incredibly frustrating to take at times; however, he was, IMHO, both thoughtful and stimulating….As many have already said, I disagreed with him on almost everything, but he was worth listening to. RIP

Mr. Blankley was proof that people can believe in the Republican agenda without
being evil.

Sad to hear of another of the Conservative Gentlemen have died. All we get are the really dangerous ones who say one thing and mean another. (Say Constitution but mean tyranny.)
Rest In Peace.

I too enjoyed listening to Tony Blankley for many reasons, mostly a fascination
with his bare knuckle elitism.  Not that elitism itself is rare, it is on an exponential
rise.  Not hiding behind some meritocratic nonsense and admitting to good old
fashioned elite paternalism, however, is so rare it is almost nonexistent.  Mr.
Blankley could perfectly describe a problem with all of the nuance and accuracy of
any leftist intellectual and arrive at the same solution as George W. Bush because .
. . . well,  because the other way lies moral hazard for the lesser among us but not
us.

Now that is old-school British elitism and I mourn its passing.

I, too, enjoyed listening to Tony Blankley on Left Right and Center and the
McLaughlin Report. Tony put things in context and had the acumen to bring some
historical prospective to his analysis. Tony had a sense of humour and didn’t get
personal or take things personally. Sometimes, when I wasn’t paying close
attention, I must confess, that I thought I was listening to Bob Scheer when Tony
was in the midst of some long analysis. I hope the show will continue with a
suitable counterbalance. He will be missed.

Sorry to hear of Tony Blankley’s passing.  I enjoyed listening to hime on Left, Right and
Center.  While I didn’t agree with him very often it was nice to hear his view on things.  My
condolences go out to his family.

While I seldom agreed with his line of thought, I always thought his delivery was cordial and well thought out. He filled a vital role on Left, Right, and Center, and he will be surely missed.

Tony Blankley was one of two reasons I listened to Left, Right, and Center.  I enjoyed hearing the conservative take on the issues from someone articulate and reasonable, which is a tall order these days.  I didn’t know he was sick; stomach cancer moves quickly so I am not surprised at this sudden news. - TheEnd

Spot on, JackAttack.

I was saddened to hear the news of his death—dying from cancer at 62 is not nice—but I’m glad his rotten politics is not longer with us.

I know this is off topic, but for all his shortfalls, failings and misgivings compared to the rest of the pack of Republican presidential hopefuls, Newt Gingrich has actually made a lot of sense. While I think it’s pretty clear neither Obama or Romney has the where with all to lead us to the “promised land”, Newt at least has an engaging mind well grounded in history and political science to see the bigger picture. And truthfully, while I voted for Obama his rather dramatic under performance has so disillusioned me that any more gibberish about “hope” and “change” will fall on deaf ears.

I, too, enjoyed listening to Tony
Blankley on NPR and Left, Right, and
Center.  Must have been that
cultivated accent that sugar coated
the bizarre right wing crapola he
espoused.  Blankley was the most
dangerous of whack jobs—he was
likable, polite, and seemingly
intelligent while advancing the
fictions of the right wing agenda.  He
was the personification of the notion
that a good presentation can win over
your detractors and get you a seat at
the table of serious discussion.  But
he was wrong about most everything
and supported the most vile
blowhard in American politics
(Gingrich) to the bitter end.  A sad
epitaph, indeed.

That’s a shame.  I always listen to Left, Right and Center, and though my politics weren’t his, he never annoyed me because he didn’t come off like some right-wing whackaloon.
