The Ethiopian army has crossed into Somalia as tensions build between the transitional Somali government and the Islamic militia that controls Mogadishu.

From The Guardian:

Fears of war in the Horn of Africa grew sharply yesterday after Ethiopia sent troops into Somalia to “protect” its neighbour’s fragile government against an advancing Islamist militia.

Dozens of Ethiopian military trucks and armoured vehicles were seen closing in on Baidoa, the seat of Somalia’s interim government, which has no army of its own. Journalists reported seeing hundreds of Ethiopian troops patrolling the town yesterday.

Update:

Sheikh Hassan Dahir, an Islamist leader in Somalia, has called for ‘holy war’ in response to the involvement of Ethiopian troops.

“I am calling on the Somali people to wage a holy war against Ethiopians in Somalia.”

I know I’ll be drawn and quartered by some for my views but…

I think it’s time we, in the “west,” began to learn from history and experience. All too often we have rushed in where even angels fear to tread to rescue those we consider the underdogs… and what happens? We wind up making things worse mainly because of our Pollyanna complex and complete ignorance of the underlying issues generating the conflicts. If civil war breaks out again in the USA, do you suppose all the warring nations on the planet will come running to help? Not a bloody chance.

How about this time, WE JUST BUTT OUT and let ‘em go at it. I know. I know. Millions might be slaughtered a la Rwanda… but THEIR FIGHTS ARE NONE OF OUR BUSINESS! (Except, of course, if “we” are supplying BOTH SIDES with armaments then it most certainly is our business… to ensure the hostilities continue as long as possible!)

So, let’s just watch ‘em duke it out. It won’t matter one way or the other anyway. I believe history records that no matter who wins this time, they’ll all be back at it next generation. It’s what we humans do.
