Egypt Opens Gaza Border CrossingPosted on May 28, 2011
Ending a four-year blockade, Egypt has permanently reopened a border crossing at Rafah that will give Palestinians in the Gaza Strip the freedom to pass into and out of the territory much more easily. Israel has maintained a military embargo along the Hamas-controlled Gaza coast since June 2007, but it is well known that people and goods have been smuggled in and out through underground tunnels on the Egypt-Gaza border. Egypt has also waived visa requirements for Palestinians entering from everywhere but Libya, and Israel is concerned that Hamas—which has controlled Gaza since 2007—is gaining too much political legitimacy despite its status as a terrorist organization. As former rivals Fatah and Hamas continue to work toward a unified Palestinian government and ultimately statehood, Egypt’s decision puts Palestinians one step closer to their goal. —KDG

The younger leaders do not have the fear of Israel or the U.S. as the former dictators did, money in not as important as morals.
They won’t, Israel has never stood idly by, they will do everything they can to create an environment where peace is unattainable, but the UN is involved and the Palestinians have taken on a non violent approach (generally), the world is tired of the status quo and Israel is being forced to comply or else.
Younger leaders with ideals don’t appear to be afraid of the Israeli ‘big stick’ anymore. They are choosing to do what is right in regard to the Palestinians, hence the border being reopened.
Not true, just because you don’t read about it in our press doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. The Arabs at first didn’t have any recognizable government to aid until Arafat and he made sure he squandered most of it and created the Palestinian passport as a tool to restrict immigration. The Arab nations were put off by Arafat as most nations but when he went the aid opened up.
It doesn’t make sense to you because you choose for it not to.

Pat;
If what you say is true about pissing off Israel, what has changed? Certainly, Mubarak was the devil Israel knew. No one knows what the new regime will look like, including Israel. So why should Israel just stand idly by now, and why should Egypt be less worried now than before about Israeli “aggression” in response to the border opening? Your reasoning doesn’t add up.

Capt Suave,
Actually they have been helping as much as they can without envoking israeli aggression against them.
The tin pot dictators of the middle east, bribed by U.S. aid, made ignoring the Palestinians plight easier although freedom to visit and attend schools in arab countries was made availible.
Now that ewgime changes are occurring thanks to the arab spring, the arab league is making efforts to have Palestine occupy a seat in the UN.

Can wait to hear the Israeli whining and sniveling over that.

how can the Palestinians not blame Israel for a significant portion of their issues. Look at
the land Israel has grabbed since 67, look at a map and see what they have been left
with! It’s not a Arab country that has been grabbing it, bull dozing their olive groves,
stealing their water sources, sniping at their kids, slaughtering them in refugee
camps(Jenin, Sabra and Shatila etc,), understanding that Christians took care of the
dirty work in the latter 2 but still the Israelis(Sharon) over saw it, see the Kahan
Commission.
If you want to talk terror, I have a friend who’s father was in the IDF in in the 60’s and
they used to go out on missions and find bands of sleeping Palestinian sheep herders
who were camping out with their flocks. They would sneak up on them, smother them in
their blankets and stab them, then leave them out there as a message. These are the
kind of stories my friends father tells, this is pre 67, this is the kind of systematic terror
that has been required in order to establish this thriving democracy in the mid east
How would you counter if a significantly more powerful nation state moved into you
country and just started grabbing all your natural resources and crushing your families. I
assume you would respond with any means possible, no?
Anyway all that aside, Israel doesn’t want Gaza and I am sure would be more than
happy to have Egypt absorb that portion of the Palestinian population , just like all the
other countries that surround greater Palestine have been forced to do for decades. All
those “Arab” nations that don’t care about the Palestinians.
Are the Palestinians supposed to blame themselves? No they should blame Israel and
Report thisthe US that both funds Israel and has consistently submitted votes in the UN General
and Security Assemblies which block any international calling to task of Israel for its
blatant/ obvious land theft and all the extenuating issues that stem from such policy.

Iran sanctions on Israeli firm are an embarrassment
But Israel wants to make money, as in selling weapons to Iran during its war with Iraq, Israel knows how to close its eyes.
Haaretz Editorial
05/27/2011
“The Ofer family started its shipping business in Haifa during the British Mandate era. With perseverance, resolve and business acumen the small agency grew into an economic empire. One of its scions, David, preferred to stay in public service and later became a police commander. His two brothers, Sammy and Yuli, bought merchant ships and tankers, expanded their fleet and spread their business over seas and continents.
Over the years the Ofer Brothers, reinforced by the family’s next generation, became an influential force in the Israeli economy. In the Ofer family’s business, the sale of a tanker for $8 million is a drop in the ocean, and the family chalks up the Americans’ objections to a misunderstanding. But its alleged sale of a ship to Iran evokes bewilderment and embarrassment.
The questions arising from it should be addressed not only to the Ofer Brothers but to Israeli officials and institutions - the Prime Minister’s Office; the ministers of defense, finance and foreign affairs; Military Intelligence, the Mossad and the navy. Where were they all when Israel was making a mockery of its own demands that the world fight Iran’s military nuclearization?
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu portrays Iran as a threat to Israel’s survival. He champions an economic siege on it, as a last resort before an attack. While Netanyahu likens Tehran’s current rulers to Berlin’s on the eve of World War II, his own shortcomings have enabled a major Israeli corporation to circumvent the sanctions and trade with a satanic foe.
True, the used-ship business is characterized by layers of brokers and the concealing of the owner’s identity by flying another country’s flag. But for some reason, when Israel confronts the Karin A, Victory and other vessels operating on the Iran-Hezbollah-Palestine line, it manages to discover what’s hiding under the rug. But when it wants to make money, as in selling weapons to Iran during its war with Iraq, Israel knows how to close its eyes. The American suspiciousness is a natural outcome of this basic truth.”

That’s what I mean. The rest of the Arab/Muslim world has been ignoring the Palestinians for as long, or longer than Israel, yet not a peep from people like you about that sad fact.

Rico,
It’s the basic hypocrisy. It’s not that Israel isn’t deserving of severe criticism and even actions to force its hand, it’s that the other side and its supporters are equally deserving of severe criticism, but all we get is attacks on “zionism” as the answer.
Once again, the power brokers and leaders in the Arab world are diverting attention from the “Arab Spring” back at Israel, once again using the Palestinians and their suffering as pawns.
The Arab states are just as responsible for the plight of Palestinians as is Israel, maybe even more so over the last 63 years (though I find that hard to argue since Likud came to power following their murder of Rabin), yet nobody dares criticize them from the so-called “progressives” for fear of being called “zionists”.
Even under the “Arab Spring” it’s a very dangerous game for the new Egyptian leadership to alienate Israel, the most powerful nation in the region.
Most people don’t realize that national politics don’t change international security needs of any nation. This is what led Iran into the imbecilic policy of making distant Israel an enemy when it is Iran’s natural ally.

Capt Suave,
Maybe it’s because the zionist poodle Mubarak is gone and the people once again choose to do what is right and can do it.
Hamas is just one political party (like the Likud) helping administering the day to day functions of millions of people (especially rationing} since the turd minded Israelis have embargoed (illegally) that country for along time.
I can’t believe that the Israel apoligists can act so ignorant to the plight of the Palestinian people.
What moral compass?

So if Gaza has been quarantined by both Israel AND Egypt, why is it that only Israel gets all the opprobrium from the truthdig set? Why did Egypt isolate, until now, its co-religionist Arab brothers and sisters? Why didn’t the Palestinians complain about Egypt as loudly as they complain about Israel?
And what about these commments from the post-
“Hamas—which has controlled Gaza since 2007” and “the Hamas Islamic movement, which controls the Palestinian enclave”.
I thought Israel controlled Gaza. What gives?
Until the Palestinians quit blaming Israel for all their troubles and realize that the rest of the Arab world views them as red-headed step children, they will never improve their prospects.
